Pipestem Resort Golf Tournament Results

The annual Summit Community Bank event at Pipestem State Park took place again on May 22nd, where 38 players took the field to see who would take home the glass vase. As typical for APT-WV events at Pipestem, mother nature made a brief appearance, halting play due to heavy rains and limited visibility. Play resumed, but mother nature returned again a few minutes after play resumed. Mother nature agreed to leave us alone the rest of the day, but only if hole 16 could be used as a sacrifice of championship dreams.

Pipestem members Carson Proffitt and Jerod Ewing took to their home course against visiting NC player Scott Goodelle. Jerod jumped out to an early lead, leading Scott by 1 going to the back 9. Carson struggled on the treacherous Par 3 3rd hole, knocking him out of contention early. Jerod and Scott battled back and forth on the back 9, before Jerod made his way to the par 5 16th. Scott made par on that hole, while Jerod suffered a double bogey, which handed Scott the Summit Community Bank Players Championship by 2 strokes.

Lindy Sullivan has had a pretty consistent season so far, and came to Pipestem a day early to get a feel for the course. The early work paid off, as Lindy took a lead to the back 9. Lindy led the majority of the back 9, before he came to the sacrificial alter known at the 16th tee box. Just like Jerod, Lindy too would take a double bogey on the 16th, which knocked him from the lead. Still in contention however for a playoff, a double at 18 knocked Lindy out of contention. Brad Whitehead and Mike Elliott had a shot to send Division 2 to extra holes, but both players took bogey on 18, which handed the win to Tyler Hetzer who shot +3 on the front, and +3 on the back, and was consistent all day long and didn’t find any trouble on the course to capture his 4th win of the season, in his first event since December.

In 2021, Dave Shepperd played Pipestem representing Division 4 and led most of the day, before he too found trouble on the 16th hole, where he would eventually lose by 2 strokes to Justin Keaton. In 2022, Dave plays in Division 3 now and would not be denied a championship at Pipestem on this day. Dave was at the front of the pack all day long and took bogey on the 16th hole to propel himself to a 4 shot victory over Brandon Kitts.

Chris Lusk has been consistent so far in his first season on the APT-WV tour, with top 5 finishes in both of his events on the West Virginia tour up to this point. He played near the front most of the day, but it was guest player Howard Logan who led early at Pipestem, going into the back 9. Howard found himself 2nd, when he made his way to the 16th, just 1 shot back. The 16th hole took another soul, as Howard took a triple, knocking himself out of contention for the championship. In the end, Chris Lusk was able to conquer the 16th hole with a par, on route to a 5 shot lead over defending Pipestem Justin Keaton, Tyler Ellison, and Howard Logan.

Mendy Bays tends to find success on the APT-WV tour when she makes an appearance, and Sunday at Pipestem would be no different. Mendy battled Jason Massie for the top spot all day long, while Jason Hancock was right on their tails. Jason took a bogey on the 16th, but went double, bogey to end his day, knocking him out of contention and finishing tied for 3rd. A double on the 16th ended Jason Hancock’s chances of winning, but he still came home 2nd, 5 shots off the pace. Mendy survived the 16th and closed strong to pick up her 1st win of the season.

Thanks to everyone who came out to play and to Steve Robertson and his team at Pipestem for hosting us again this season. We would also like to thank our wonderful sponsors who helped us put on this event: Summit Community Bank, Benjamin Farley Agency, JL Massie Insurance, Lucky Rivers Café, and Southern Communications.
