With over an inch of rain the night and morning of the event, conditions were wet. But the sun was out with a gentle breeze by tee off, and despite a difficult and tight course and cart path only, the competition was as good as it ever has been, with the last hole playing a big part in deciding the Season Championship, and the Season Long Points Winners. Starting on hole 10 to let the front 9 drain made for an interesting finish, as the front 9 is substantially harder than the back.
Division 1 was a battle, with Alex Fortuna returning to action and holding the lead through the first 13 holes. But Kory Glasgow, Larry Langley and Rob Spriggel were close behind, and with the rest of the difficult front 9 left to play. The closing stretch proved to be a tough one for Alex, Larry and Rob. Larry and Rob dropped back a few strokes, and Alex carded 4 bogies in his final 6 holes to shoot 4 over par and bring Kory back into the mix that would ultimately lead to a playoff. Kory took the win on the second playoff hole, sealing his points championship with the victory, but it was great having Alex back out on the course.
Brian Taylor was once again at the top of the leader board for most of the day in Division 2, but Kyle Mayer was hot on his heals with Armando Smith also close behind. Brian may not be the longest hitter, but he finds fairways, and on a course as tight as this, that’s the most important part as penalty strokes loom for offline shots. Kyle Mayer played awesome, carding a 5 over par 77, but it wasn’t enough to take the win from Brian with his 3 over par 75.
Matthew Morgan set the early clubhouse lead for Division 3, with a solid round of 12 over par 84, but had to wait around to see what would happen as there were a lot of players that looked to be a threat to his lead. 11 players finished within 3 strokes of the eventual victor, making it the closest tournament yet, and making Matt plenty anxious waiting. But only Todd Gurss would match his score, leading to a playoff. It only took one hole for Todd to come out victorious, notching another win this season.
Division 4 couldn’t have been much more fun to watch than it was. Leroy Barnes did the opposite of just about every other player, and improved his score after the first 9 holes, by a LOT. Leroy bettered his last 9 holes by 13…THIRTEEN strokes! But a bogey on the last (hole 9), and birdie by Troy St. Clair tied them at 16 over par, with only one player behind them that had a chance to beat them. Brandon Hale. And what does Brandon do? Pipes a drive down the fairway, and sticks a wedge to a foot for an easy birdie and to clench his victory at 15 over par.
Division 5 had a familiar face winning again as he’s made a habit of winning all over the country this season. Rocky Metcalfe sealed the season up with a comfortable 4 stroke win over the constantly improving Casey Bjornstad.
