The Amateur Players Tour Birmingham Chapter held its first Stableford event at Horse Creek in Dora, AL. A fun track with plenty of opportunities to take some risks and increase your points quota with a birdie or better. The weather was definitely on our side as the rain ended just before we teed off at 9:30 and held off until the last group finished around 3:30.
Division 1
Dana Amberson of Hartselle, AL showed up to play on Saturday and took first place with 38 points in the modified stableford format. Dana made two birdies on the day and played solidly the whole day. Brooks Roberts of Winston Salem, NC took second place after finishing with three birdies on the back nine to close the gap on Dana. Bret Mayfield from Decatur, AL placed third with 32 points.
Division 2
Kevin Schrum from Pelham, AL scored 34 points to take the title for the second event in a row. Kevin’s round included two birdies with the closing birdie to secure the victory. Logan Kendrick from Gardendale, AL lead most of the day until a final hole bogey opened the door for Kevin to take the win. Corey Gooch from Adamsville, AL placed third with 29 points.
Division 3
Division 3 was a tight contest all day that ultimately ended up with Christian Cox and Ande Jones tying with 32 points. Christian and Ande went into a sudden death playoff with Christian taking the title after the first playoff hole. Christian’s round was up and down most of the day, but four birdies was the key to day. Landon Bertarelli came in third only 2 points back.
Division 4
After the front nine of the event Jeff Noel from Birmingham, AL was leading with ten points and Mark Rigby from Cusseta, AL was right behind with eight points. However, on the back nine Mark scored eleven points to Jeffs’ six points to take the title in Division 4. This was also Mark’s second victory in a row. Kenny Robbins from Hartselle, AL came in third only two point2 back.
Division 5
Wilson Gammill from Ackerman, MS also took his second victory in a row by outlasting Don Hamblett from Madison, AL. After the round Wilson, credited his victory to his play on the par threes where he had two birdies. With Wilson scoring ten of his thirteen points on par threes, he was sure to be tough to beat. Josh Vadney from Hartselle, AL placed third one point behind Hamblett.
