With a beautiful spring day emerging, anticipation was building for an exciting tournament at the Preserve at Verdae Greens.
Division 5 winner Devin Walker secured his first victory on the Amateur Players Tour. Devin was able to steady his play on the inward nine to win by six shots. Alex Franklin, one of young and upcoming players, continues to show improvement taking second place.
Division 4 saw Justin Bennett (47-45-92) take third after a scorecard playoff. APT Chapter Owner Larry Lee (48-44-92) took second on the playoff. The real story is Larry still can’t beat his father after all these years. Joe Lee (45-41-86), after a small adjustment to his swing, this past week, showed if you swing at the king, you best not miss.
Division 3 was a tighter leaderboard. Darrell Johnson (47-39-86), who was recently promoted, made a charge on the back nine. Darrell would have to settle for second. Bill Russell (40-43-83) played steady all day with only one hole worse than bogey all day. Bill’s steady play secured his win.
Division 2 was a packed leader board all day. Matt Doumar (43-41-84) and Rich Pizio (42-41-83) put themselves in position for a win but would come up short of their quest, Wesley Jones (43-39-82) proved to be the man to beat as he steadied the game on the inward nine.
Division 1 normally doesn’t see big swings in the leaderboard and for most of the day this proved to be true. The last three holes would challenge the leaders as the closed out the round. Jason Beck, from the Augusta Chapter, put himself in position to secure the win, but would stumble slightly and settled for third. Daniel Jackson, who had to think he let his slip after his opening nine, found himself in contention coming into the closing stretch. Daniel would have to settle for second. The day would belong to Dan Constantino. With his backswing longer with the putter thAn his full swing, made the right decisions in the closing stretch of holes to secure his first victory on the APT-Upstate Chapter.
A special thanks goes out to our intern Kim VanGeersdaelen for her assistance. We also want to thank Randy Hodges for his assistance with scoring.
