On the recommendation from a few members, the Amateur Players Tour – Charlotte added Gaston Country Club to our schedule. With Gaston Country Club having hosted the Wells Fargo Pre-Monday qualifier and Monday qualifier for the PGA Tour, our members found a course in great condition for tournament golf.
Division 5 saw players jockey for position most of the outward none. Billy Hunt (51-45-96) clawed his way into the lead on the back nine only to stumble on 18 and would have to settle for third, one shot out of the playoff. Bill Sturgeon (45-50-95) and Lloyd Morris (48-47-95) found themselves in a tie after 18. It only took one playoff hole as Lloyd sunk a 20-foot putt for his sandy to win his second event of the year.
Division 4 was a tight competition all day with eight players all within two shots of each other. The leaderboard would flip a few times on the inward nine and was exciting to watch. Finishing tied for forth but just outside of the money determined by a scorecard playoff are Dean Barron (45-92-87), Brian Gregor (43-44-87), Sam Carpenter (44-43-87) and Joseph Lee (44-43-87). Mark Langford (47-40-87) takes fourth place money. Larry Lee (41-45-86) gets a little redemption by beating his father by a shot and settles for third place. Veteran tour member, Vic Lawrence (45-41-86) takes second on a scorecard playoff. Mike Martin II (41-44-85) played solid golf all day to secure his first victory by one.
Division 3 saw two players emerge from the field to battle for the title. Terry Upright (43-38-81) made achage on the back nine but would come up a shot short and settle for second. Malcolm Niven (40-40-80) played steady all day to secure his second APT victory of the year. Round out the money positions Nolan Elenz (42-42-84) takes third on a scorecard playoff. Anthony Mullis (42-42-84) settles for fourth.
Division 2 theme of the day was ball striking. Players enjoyed the quality conditions and the reward of well struck shots. Mark Ballew (40-37-77) takes fourth. Early leader, Rich Pizio (34-41-76) takes third on a scorecard playoff, while Donnie Hasen (39-37-76) takes second. The day belonged to one of our guests for the day, Matt Jones (37-36-73). Matt started his round as the man to beat going one under after 7 holes and never let off the gas all day.
Division 1 had six players settle atop the leaderboard for most of the day. Paying out the top four players, a scorecard playoff would be needed for position 3 and 4. Finishing just outside the money, Adam Arnett (37-38-75) and Scott Roberts (39-36-75) but still earn valuable play of the year points. Jody Clary (39-36-75) playing his first APT event takes fourth in the tiebreaker. A familiar name to many this season, Daniel Jackson (40-35-75) turned it around on his inward nine to take third. Dennis Reames (35-37-72) takes second as he stayed in touch with the leader all day and try to make a run on the back nine but was unable to get the birdie putts to fall. Gaston CC member, who also assisted in securing the course on the schedule, took full advantage of his local knowledge. Scott Patnode (34-36-70) jumped out to an early lead and managed he course well to secure the win. We wish Scott good luck as he tries to qualify for the USGA Senior Open on Monday.
A special thanks goes out to all the players for getting around the course in 4 hours and 30 minutes. Full field Tournament Shotgun events are difficult to keep pace of play reasonable. With everyone working together and playing ready golf we all get the proverbial GOLF CLAP for the accomplishment.
As always, a sincere thank you goes out to our members, our guests , along with Gaston Country Club and their staff for an exciting, action packed and fun day.
