2025 Wine Country Championship At Cross Creek Golf Club Tournament Results
Tournament Champions
Tour Stop #8 and our second Elevated Event of the season “The Wine Country Championships” was held at The Golf Club of Rancho, CA and Cross Creek GC. We were blessed with 2 days of great weather! 75-80 degrees with a slight breeze both days and hot air balloons on display. Golfers traveled from 7 states to compete for the famous Wine Barrel trophies given out once a year at this event, along with a double prize pool. Thank you to our sponsors EBS Escrow, Premier Jet Service, Stewart Title, and Troy Shedeed Real Estate for helping make this event happen. So who were the champs?
Division 1: We had a good field in Division 1 with golfers from Nevada, Utah, and SoCal. Las Vegas Chapter points leader Joshua Crossen (Las Vegas, NV) was off to a great start with eagle on #1 and finished at even par 72 and the clubhouse leader. Sterling Peterson (Holliday, UT) was battling and on the back nine went birdie, birdie, birdie to finish day 1 in second position with a 73. Leonardo Giron (Chula Vista, CA) was playing as a guest and cracked his driver on hole #9, he stayed in the hunt using his 5w on the back nine to shoot 75 and in third. Also in contention were Joel Clark (Irvine, CA) and Greg Delgado (Corona, CA) also with 75’s. Day 2 brought us to Cross Creek golf club nestled in the back woods and vineyards of the Temecula Hills. This demanding course would be a true test for the leaders. Joshua again started off strong making birdie on #1 to increase his lead. Sterling and Leonardo continued consistent play and as it came down to 18 Leonardo was in the clubhouse as the leader with rounds of 75 and 75. Joshua had a rough go on 18 and took double bogey, but Sterling at 18 years old, made birdie and capped a 2-day score of 73, 75 to take the trophy and $400! Leonardo ended up second and Joshua third. As a guest Leonardo earned himself a membership on the APT with his second-place finish.
Division 2: Joining us from the Arizona chapter as current points leader was Curt Bressner (Buckeye, AZ). He battled his way around the Robert Trent Jones designed course with an 82. Patrick Ryan (Corona, CA) who joined us at Soboba was back in the field and held the lead until double bogey on 18 put him at 82 and into a tie with Curt. 70-year-old Thomas Crowder (Glendale, CA) was playing well and also ended up shooting 82 and all three men would go into the final group on Day 2, tied! Vinny O’Brien (Sun Valley, CA) was 3 shots back but battling back on day 2. Curt started his final round at one over through 4 to take a lead and he wouldn’t look back, making birdie on 12, he kept playing well shooting 78 and the victory in division 2 and $400. Vinny and Patrick ended up tied for second.
Division 3: Our largest division field of the weekend with 19 golfers from 3 states. Day 1 saw tour veteran Ryan Encinas (Oceanside, CA) play well and take a 3 shot lead over the field. New member Chase Hatcher (Capistrano Beach, CA) Nico Romera (Placentia, CA) and season points leader Will Kamp (Los Angeles, CA) were all close shooting 85, 86, and 87. Day 2 at Cross Creek being out in the back hills of Temecula had no signal for cell service and a live leaderboard was not possible. This kept Kyle Wolack (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) in suspense as he was in the clubhouse after shooting a great round of 83 but no way of knowing if it would hold up. The leaders in Division 3 were all battling and it wasn’t clear if any of them were going to hold on. Finally it was scorecard time and the results came in, Kyle had come from 8 shots back to win division 3 and the $500 first place prize. Ryan Encinas ended up second, Matthew Tokunaga (Las Vegas, NV) came in third, and Will and Nico tied for fourth. This has vaulted Kyle and Ryan into 4th and 5th in the season points race. Congrats to all of you!
Division 4: Another nice field in division 4 with 17 players, including one of our female contestants Baska Tugsgerel (Irvine, CA) was starting off on fire with an 86 and the lead after day 1. Kurt Odegard (Anaheim Hills, CA), and Aaron Bryan (Carlsbad, CA) were both just one shot back going into day 2 with others within striking distance. The day 2 leaders were going out last and a few others were making moves in the early groups. Brad Forsyth (Alta Loma, CA) and Armando Aguirre (Murrieta, CA) were both playing strong and waiting in the clubhouse to see the final scores. Armando shot 92/91 and Brad finished 90/92 and had a one-shot lead over Armando, leaving it to the final group. Aaron Bryan, Russel and Baska all had challenges on the round. However, Kurt continued his strong play from day one and shot 87/94 to win over Brad by 1 shot! This was Kurt’s first win this season on tour and second overall. He also took home the $500 prize and the wine barrel trophy. Great contest by everyone!
Division 5: Tommy Weatherby (Sun City, CA) Kirk Olmos (Moreno Valley, CA) tour veterans in division 5 both were playing good rounds at the Golf Club of Rancho CA on day 1. However new tour member and another one of our female golfers was shooting a record round for herself. Danielle Tavizon (Glendora, CA) was making birdies, and staying consistent shooting her best round ever of 84 in competitive golf and a 6 shot lead over Kirk going into day 2. Cross Creek got the best of them on day 2 and none of the field could make a move on Danielle and catch her. She shot 97 and it was good enough to take the Division 5 win and $400. Kirk finished second and Tommy third, increasing his lead in the player of the year standings. Kirk’s points moved him into third and now in position to make the Southwest Cup team later this year.
Senior Net Contest
Danielle Tavizon (Glendora, CA) with her great day 1 round put her in position to win the Senior net contest and collect another $320! Ryan Encinas (Oceanside, CA) and Brad Forsyth (Alta Loma, CA) both tied for second and won $110 each.
Open Net Contest
Greg Delgado (Corona, CA) playing in division 1, but on a tough course it helped him win with a +8 Net score and collect $315. Aaron Steinburg (Torrance, CA) and Matthew Tokunaga (Las Vegas, NV) tied for second at +9 and we had a three way tie for fourth with Baska Tugsgerel (Irvine, CA) Joel Clark (Irvine, CA) and Nico Romero (Placentia, CA) all were at +11
