The APT Southern California Chapter made their second stop of the season in San Diego County yesterday at Native Oaks GC in Valley Center for the APT SoCal Masters. The former Woods Valley GC has been revitalized by Troon Golf and served as a great host on a warm and beautiful summer day.
San Diego native Alfonso Franco fired a 75 with four birdies in his second outing on Tour, good for a six shot victory in Division 1 over Saddleback College player Denis Watson. He collected a $100 Visa Gift Card and the Masters Plaque for his victory! Division 1 played the Native Oaks Black tees at 6700 yards.
It was newcomers vs. Tour veterans in Division 2, and the newcomers separated themselves from the pack. In fact, it took a playoff to separate first time players Derek Brogdon and Chris Hanson who both posted 79’s. Derek led around the turn with an even par 36, chased by Chris and Mitchell Harrison three back. It was the par 5 11th where things started getting tight, and Chris’s birdie on 12 and par on 13 got him square with Derek. In the first playoff hole, Chris striped his tee shot and unfortunately Derek pulled his ball left, making Chris the quick one hole winner! He took home a $150 Visa Gift Card and the Masters Plaque.
It was tight at the top in Division 3 after four players posted 40 or better on the front, led by Brandan Marshall (39) with Julian Vo, Jose Perez, and Vinny O’Brien all one back. On the challenging back 9, it was still anyone’s game through 15, with Julian up one over Jose and two over Vinny and Brandan. However, it was Brandan’s closing 3 pars in completing his 82 that proved to be the winning margin. Jose claimed 2nd on the scorecard tiebreaker over Julian and the $50 Visa Gift Card. Brandan takes home the trophy and a $175 Visa Gift Card for his win! Both Division 2&3 played the APT Orange tees at 6450 yards.
He had been close and now that he got that taste, Milton Gray is making winning a habit- claiming his second title in his last three outings. He played a practice round the week prior and that clearly paid off, posting an 88 on Saturday which was good for a five shot victory over Bartel Drake (great to have you back Bartel!) Milton usually avoids watching the leaderboard so he had no idea until the trophy was presented to him! Milton takes the Masters Plaque and a $150 Visa Gift Card as the lone Division 4 participant to break 90. The season standings in Division 4 are tight with just three local and one national tournament to go!.
Dennis McZeal joined Milton in the practice round, and they made it a double- he also joined Milton in the winner’s circle with his 90 cruising to victory in Division 5. Good for his third victory of the year, Dennis extends his points lead heading into the fall season and solidifies his Pinehurst ticket, as well as earning the trophy and a $100 Visa Gift Card! Divisions 4&5 men played the APT Green tees at 6200 yards, with seniors 60+ at 5900 yards, and women on the APT Red tees at 5300 yards.
