The 2023 has started out with 3 sell outs in a row! We had only booked course for 52 players and had 12 on waiting list. Thanks to Jimmy Biggs and Caleb at Pine Lakes for letting us squeeze the remaining players in. The staff at Pine Lakes is one of the best in the Myrtle beach area for sure. We also had about a 45 min. frost delay that made things more challenging for sure. The cart staff was able to help get everyone loaded up and we sent the players off in record time. Pace of Play was awesome. We averaged 4hrs 37 mins with our fastest round of 4.22 and slowest of 4.58. Keep in mind the course was full and we ran into public play when making the turn. Again, thanks to all of our players and the course staff for helping with this. We pride ourselves in pace of play! 63 players began play around 9:30. We also had players visit from 8 APT Chapters from as far away as Ky. Thanks to all that came. The weather started out a little chilly but ended up being a beautiful day. The prize fund was solid as well. We paid out a total of $3350 for this event. $2015 in was in the prize fund and $1335 was in Skins and Pins. We also had a 50/50 drawing and Mark Stroupe won $242 and Jason Lawson won the APT Hat and Towel.
Division 1 once again was a large field for us with 11 players and was a dogfight for sure. Had to go 3 extra holes to decide the winner. Chris Collins the reigning POY for Myrtle Beach Chapter and the 2 time North American Champion, Scott Roberts from the Charlotte Chapter battled it out all day. Chris and Scott made the turn at even par. They were not playing in the same group but pretty sure they were looking at live scoring. Chris made a birdie 3 on #13 and with Scott made a bogey 5 on #14, Chris came to 15 with a 2 shot lead and when he made bogey on #17 and par on #18 he was the leader in the club house by 1 shot at Even Par (70). Scott came to #18 needing to make a birdie to force a playoff and as usual Scott was able to birdie the very difficult the par 4 to force the playoff. They headed back to #10 and finally Scott was able to win on #12. Great match for sure. With the win Scott received $165, Chris $80. Jeff Helms finished 3rd (76) and David Gibson and Hugo Denis (MB) finished tied for 4th at (77).
Division 2 had 16 players and paid 3 places. Lucas Hardee Carolina Triad Tour member took the crown. He cared a very impressive +6 (76) to win by 1 over defending Champion and another Carolina Triad member Bob Sheehan. Bob played great on the front and was even at the turn. He had a 1 shot lead over Lucas and 4 over Rick. Rick was able to play steady on the back and with a birdie bogey finish he was the leader in the Club House. Bob and Lucas were playing in the same group a couple holes behind Rick. Bob slipped and made double on #11 giving Lucas the lead. The lead went back and forth over remaining holes. When they got to #18, Lucas held a 1 shot advantage over Bob and Rick. They both made Bogey and that sealed the deal. Lucas had come away with a very hard fought victory. Bob and Rick finished tied for 2nd with Michael Martin coming off his win at Kings North taking 4th (78) and Don Sheads and Jimmy Starrett tied for 5th. Lucas received $220 for his win, Rick $90 and Bob $50.
Division 3 had 14 players battling for the win. My “Buddy” Cliff Marcum from (MB) played his best round in a long time and carded an impressive 78 (+8) to win by 6 over our very own Jaime Costanzo. Jaime held a 1 shot lead after their opening 9 but Cliff woke up or maybe went to sleep and carded his best 9 in several years, a 1 over par 37. Some are saying welcome to Div 2, we will see!! Kyle Mitchell (MB), Bill Rose (Ga) and Matt Patterson (Ga) finished tied for 3rd at (86). For his win Cliff took home $190, Jaime $80 and Kyle $45 (Card Playoff)
Division 4 also had 14 players playing and our very own Gene Lance came from 7 shots back after 9 to pick up his 1st win of the young season. After the opening 9, Gene found himself trailing Kyle Henneman (MB) by 7 and Bruce Shively (MB) by 4. Gene also played one of his best 9 holes in a while. He carded 2 birdies on the back to finish at +2 (37). Bruce was the first group out and actually asked to go off first due to a family get together later in the afternoon and was the leader on the Clubhouse so he waited around for about an hour just in case of a playoff. Glad he did. Gene was able to play his last 4 holes even par to force a playoff. Gene and Bruce headed back to #10 and when Gene made par on the difficult par 4, #12 he was the winner. Kyle playing in his first event, struggled a little on his inward 9 but held on for 3rd. JD Lee fresh off his victory in the Senior Div at the Disney Season Kickoff and Brian Raymond finished tied for 4th. Gene received $190, Bruce $80 and Kyle $45.
Division 5 had 8 players and was close all day. Jason Lawson from Virginia Capitol Chapter coming off his first win at King’s North a couple weeks ago was the leader after 9. Joseph Hollis (Ky Chapter) playing in the same group with Jason was 1 back after their opening 9. Joseph pulled even on #10 and they went back and forth the rest of the way. They came to #9 their 18th hole with Jason holding a 1 shot lead. They both struggled and Jason came away with his 2nd victory in a row. I think he loves playing at the beach. Jason finished at (91), Joseph (92). Ricky Compton (MB) took 3rd (96) and Calvin Beckman (MB) took 4th. Jason received $140 and Joseph $40. Jason will be taking a grand total of $295 for his 2 events he came down to play. Not too shabby!!!
