The Amateur Players Tour-Birmingham Chapter hosted a local two-day major at Burningtree Country Club in Decatur, AL. Burningtree is an older style, tree-lined country club with firm and fast greens. Players from five different chapters battled it out for over $4700 in prizes in windy conditions.
Division 1 was a horse race that seen three different players hold the lead on the final day. Mike Weathers, Zoe Walker, and Derek Nicholson all held the lead during the final round. Derek used birdies on holes eight and nine to take the lead and didn’t surrender that lead. Derek posted a two-day total of +9 to take a one-shot victory over Mike and Zoe. Derek was awarded the trophy and a $375 Visa Gift Card.
Division 2 looked to be a runaway after the first day with Tim Miller taking a six-shot lead into the final round. After struggles early in the round Tim seen his lead go away. Michael Romine had a one-shot lead with three holes to go then a double bogey on the final hole opened the door for Tim to play the final three holes at even to take a one-shot victory, posting +15 for the two days. Tim was awarded the trophy and a $360 Visa Gift Card.
Division 3 followed the theme of the event with close battles throughout the entire event. Jason Harbin and Karl Jung were going back and forth for most of the final day. Jason used a solid back nine while Karl struggled on the way in. Jason ended up with a five-stroke victory by posting +24 total for two days. Jason was awarded the trophy and the $360 Visa Gift Card.
Division 4 seen low scores on day one and then the wind on day two played spoiler on the low scores. Mike Penn stayed as steady as anyone in Division 4 on day two to end up with the victory. Mike posted a two-day total of +31 to secure the four-shot victory. Mike was awarded the trophy and a $360 Visa Gift Card.
Division 5 also followed suit and seen a close battle between the final pairing of the day. Tim Harbin and Bo Watson went toe to toe and seen the lead change a handful of times on the final day. Bo played a very solid back nine to take advantage of late round struggles from Tim to take a two-shot victory. Bo posted a two-day total of +43. Bo was awarded the trophy and a $410 Visa Gift Card.
Next up on the Birmingham Chapter is a visit to Horse Creek in Dora, AL on May 21, 2023. Players from all over the state are vying for crucial Player of the Year points. Each division Player of the Year will receive an award package valued at over $700.
