The final major of the 2024 calendar year took the APT to Myrtle Beach, SC and 2 Top-100 courses in Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and True Blue Golf Club. 124 players from Seattle to Myrtle Beach descended on Myrtle Beach for the 2UNDR Myrtle Beach Holiday Classic, competing for over $13,000 in prizes paid in 5 Divisions, an Open/Senior Net and the Worldwide Golf Par 3 and Par 5 Challenges. In Division 1, through 35-holes we had 5 players within one-shot of the lead with Eric King (Kentucky), Stuart Smith (Charlotte), Michael Thornburg (Upstate South Carolina), Chuck Floyd (Charlotte), and Sean Boyle (Myrtle Beach). Stuart Smith stepped up on 18 needing a birdie to force a playoff with Michael Thornburg, and that’s exactly what he did coming up clutch to force a sudden-death playoff that would be on the iconic par-4 18th hole at True Blue. A par on the first playoff hole would be good enough to earn the victory. Michael Thornburg came in second place, losing in a sudden-death playoff. Eric King, Chuck Floyd and Sean Boyle finished in a tie for 3rd just one shot off the pace.
In Division 2, Travis Wartlfuft (Charlotte) got off to a hot start on Saturday at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, shooting even par to take a 5-shot lead headed into Sunday against a crowded field. Mike Vawter (Maryland) made an impressive back 9 charge, with 9 straight pars to put pressure on Wartluft, but he was able to hang on to his lead to earn a two-shot win at 8-over par. Vawter finished in solo 2nd at +10, while John Wayne Parrish (Carolina Triad) finished in 3rd place at +12. 4th place honors were earned by Chuck Bell (Charleston), while Joseph Jones (Augusta) and Todd Feuerhaken (St. Louis) rounded out the top 5 at +15. 7th place honors was a tie between Chuck Nance (Charlotte), Richard Norman (Myrtle Beach) and Jim Baugher (Virginia Capital) at +16.
In Division 3, 36 holes would not be enough to decide a winner as Charlotte’s Andre Banks and Augusta’s Shawn Powers were tied at the top. As players watched on from the patio adjacent to the 18th green, Banks and Powers would head out to a sudden-death playoff on the venerable 18th hole at True Blue. Banks would prevail with a par to earn his first major victory on the Amateur Players Tour. Shawn Powers, who finished at +21, would finish in solo 2nd. 3rd place honors would go to Marc Janse Van Rensburg (Charlotte) and Nick Girard (Seattle), who finished at +24, while Myrtle Beach’s Chris Minar would round out the top-5 at +28. Rob Andrews (Carolina Triad), Andrew Gray (Upstate South Carolina), and Chris Huge (Myrtle Beach) each tied for 6th at +29.
In Division 4, Steve Thomas (Atlanta) got off to a hot start shooting 10-over par during round 1 at Caledonia to build a sizeable lead heading into Sunday’s final round. A hot start to Sunday’s final round would put Thomas’ lead out of reach for the rest of the field, as he cruised to his first victory with a 2-day total of 21-over par. Thomas Gibson (Charlotte) and Daniel Henris (Carolina East) finished tied for 2nd place at +30. The highlight of Henris’ week was a hole-in-one on the par-3 6th hole at Caledonia on Saturday. 4th place went to St. Louis’ Dolly Buenaventura at +32, building on her successful 2024 season while Dave Funkhouser (Myrtle Beach)returned to form with a 5th place finish at +34.
