2024 APT Summer Stableford Shootout Results

The Amateur Players Tour traveled up in the mountains of rural North Carolina to take on the top-rated Sequoyah National Golf Club.  Known for its stunning views, dramatic elevation changes, and difficult green complexes, Sequoyah National would prove to be a worthy test for the 152-player field from around the country who showed up for the APT Summer Stableford Shootout.  With a modified stableford format, birdies would be rewarded for aggressive play, but danger lurked at every corner with a golf course that is almost entirely risk-reward.

In Division 1, Will Morgan (Carolina Triad) completed the comeback on Sunday, finishing with a weekend best 42 points to finish with 81 points and a 4 point victory.  John Masotti (Carolina Triad) and first round leader Kyle Moffett (Carolina Triad) finished in second place with a total of 77 points.  Ivan Jones (Carolina Triad) and Jody Clary (Upstate South Carolina) finished in a tie for 4^th place with 2-day totals of 66 points.

In Division 2, Denver Hubert (Augusta) followed up his runner-up finish at the APT Players Championship at Streamsong with a victory at Sequoyah National with rounds of 75-77 to finish with 66 points and finish 2-points ahead of Travis Wartluft (Charlotte).  Wartluft’s runner up finish pads his lead in the 2024 GlobalGolf.com National Player of the Year race.  James Davis (Atlanta) and Johnny Pierce (East Tennessee) finished in a tie for 3^rd place with 61 points, while Sam Lewis (Charleston) and Mick Correll (Carolina Triad) finished with 59 points for the event in a tie for 5^th.  7^th place honors would be split between Ray Tricarico (Myrtle Beach) and Cuong Ton (Carolina Triad) with 58 points for the tournament.

Division 3 would be shortened to 29 holes due to pop-up thunderstorms that washed out play on Sunday afternoon.  Mitchell Long (Carolina Triad) took advantage of his career best round on Saturday to build a sizable lead.  Sunday, would prove to be challenging but Long held on for a one-shot victory with 54 points.  Runner-up went to Dan Eastep (Upstate South Carolina), who’s 2-day total of 53 points fell just short of Long.  Eastep’s highlight of the weekend was a hole-out eagle on the difficult par-4 7^th hole on Saturday, securing the only super skin of the day.  3^rd place went to Andre Banks (Charlotte) and Ryan Hunley (Atlanta), who each finished with 43 points for the weekend.  5^th place went to Greg Goff (Kentucky) with 42 points, while Greg Mason (Birmingham) and Matt Miller (Charlotte) each finished with 41 points.

Division 4 would be shortened to 24 holes due to the inclement weather.  Dave Funkhouser (Myrtle Beach) would emerge victorious and return to the winners circle earning 36 points for an 8 point victory. Monty Berry (Atlanta), the reigning D5 North American Champion would put up a good fight, earning runner-up honors with 28 points.  Sasha Malich (Dallas/Fort Worth) finished in solo 3^rd place with 27 points, while Nick Lorenzo (Myrtle Beach) and Scott Johnson (Augusta) tied for 4^th with 26 points.  Jeff Leagan (Augusta) finished in 6^th place with 25 points for the weekend.

Division 5 would be shortened to 21 holes, and it would not be enough to determine a winner as Rivia Brown (Carolina Triad) and Danny Sullivan (Upstate South Carolina) would be tied at 19 points each.  Rivia Brown’s top finish padded her lead in the 2024 GlobalGolf.com National Player of the Year race.  3^rd place would go to Travis Shively (Myrtle Beach) with 16 points, while Austin Hubert (Augusta) would finish in solo 4^th place with 15 points.

Both the Open Net and Senior Net contests were shortened to 21 holes, as that was the most # of common holes completed by the field.  In Open Net, Jesse Vanvleet (Kentucky) built on a solid performance at the APT Public Links at Annbriar, earning 49 points to earn a 2-point victory over Michael Shirley (Upstate South Carolina).  Chuck Young (Charlotte) earned 3^rd place honors and also cashed in with a Hole-In-One at the par-3 6^th hole on Sunday.  In Senior Net, Ryan Hunley (Atlanta) emerged victorious earning 64 points to best Andre Banks (Charlotte) and Dan Eastep (Upstate South Carolina) by 3 points.

The next major for the APT is the 2024 Independence Open, to be contested at Big Cedar Lodge at Ozarks National and Payne’s Valley on July 6^th-7^th with a sold-out field of 160 players.  Registration opens for priority exempt players on July 9^th for the 2024 North American Championship and 2024 Senior North American Championships in Myrtle Beach, SC.
