Despite inclement weather that brought a premature ending to Sunday’s Charleston Amateur Players Tour Tournament at Charleston National Golf Club, a large field of golfers enjoyed one of the Lowcountry’s “hidden gems.”

Located in Mount Pleasant, SC, Charleston National Golf Club is a Rees Jones designed course that is rated as one of the best in the area by Golf Digest. The publication ranked Charleston National the best non-resort course in the Lowcountry area.

The course is carved along the intracoastal waterway, through natural wetlands and lagoons and through a pine and oak tree forest. The result is a championship caliber golf course with some of the best views on the southeastern coast.

Charleston National was originally designed to be an exclusive private country club in the manner of Augusta National. Designer Rees Jones was brought in to build the finest golf course on the coast. Today Charleston National is a reasonably priced semi-private golf course and is considered the “hidden gem” of the Lowcountry.

The Charleston Amateur Players Tour travels the Lowcountry of South Carolina, and portions of Georgia, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete for cash and VISA gift card prizes across ten different divisions.

While the tournament was cut short, here’s the results from Sunday’s tournament:

Division 1 – David Gibson used consecutive birdies on the front nine to climb the leaderboard as he shot 65 (+4) through 15 holes. Gibson took advantage of the par-four fourth hole before making another birdie on the following hole.

James Gibson and Phil Pfeiffer finished tied for second with a 67 (+6) through 15 holes. Gibson made his first birdie of the day on the ninth hole before making another birdie shortly after on the par-four 11th hole.

Jason Myers and Bond Williams rounded out the top-five with rounds of 77 and 78, respectively.

Division 2 – Chuck Bell’s steady day that included nine pars was enough to earn him the top honors in Division 2 on Sunday as he finished the day at six-over par, 63 strokes through 14 holes. Bell made six pars on the front nine en route to carding a four-over par 40 on the outward stretch.

Bret Stansfield and Jeff Sheidow finished close behind, as the two tied for second after carding rounds of 64 through 14 holes. Stansfield took advantage of two par fives with birdies as Sheidow wasted no time making a birdie as he took advantage of the par-three second hole.

Matthew York shot 65 to finish fourth, followed by Dylan Murakami with a round of 70 to round out the top-five.

Senior Division 2 – Chuck Bell’s round of 63 through 14 holes was also good enough for him to claim the clean sweep with a win in Senior Division 2 as well. Jeff Sheidow was close behind, finishing in the runner-up position with a round of 64.

Darrell Johnson rounded out the division with a round of 73 through 14 holes to finish in third place.

Division 3 – Cliff Marcum played his final eight holes of the day in one under par to finish with 54 strokes through 12 holes to win Division 3 on Sunday. Marcum bounced back from consecutive double bogies on the front nine with a pair of birdies before the weather rolled in.

Joshua Patridge and Tony Mizzell finished tied for second, six shots behind, as the two both carded 60 strokes through 12 holes. Mizzell found his groove midway through the round with four consecutive pars on the front none.

Jeff Price shot 62 to finish fourth, followed by a tie for fifth place including Chris Huge and Chad Eldredge.

Senior Division 3 – Cliff Marcus separated himself from the field as well in Senior Division 3 to complete the sweep with 54 strokes through 12 holes. Marcum was just heating up as the weather set in, playing his last eight holes in one under par.

Tony Mizzell finished second with a score of 60, followed by Jeff Price in third with a score of 62.

Chris Huge and Chad Eldredge tied for fourth place to round out the top-five as both players finished with 63 strokes. Eldredge highlight of the day came with a birdie on the par-three seventh hole.

Division 4 – An intense battle amongst four golfers was mounting down the stretch, but Mother Nature brought a premature ending to play just after 11 holes in Division 4. Thomas Hart won by one shot with 56 strokes, defeating Dave Funkhouser and John Haynie tied for second place, just one stroke behind.

Hart held a one-shot lead that was enough to win the shortened event. Funkhouser and Haynie tied for second, followed by Cooter Douglas and Randy Poplin, who rounded out the division with scores of 59 and 63, respectively.

Senior Division 4 – The same battle played out to the same result in Senior Division 4 as Thomas Hart also won the top spot with his score of 86 strokes in 11 holes. Dave Funkhouser and John Haynie tied for second place, after both players posted scores of 57.

Cooter Douglas shot 59 in 11 holes as Randy Poplin rounded out the top-five in the division with a score of 63.

Division 5 – William Dagley left the rest of Division 5 in the dust as he shot 52 in 11 holes to win the division on Sunday. Dagley made birdie on the par-five 10th hole, his second to last hole of the day before the inclement weather moved in.

Bret Thompson shot 71 through 11 holes as David Wilkinson rounded out the division with 72 strokes in 11 holes.
