The APT headed to Scottsdale, Arizona for Cinco De Mayo weekend for its second straight National Major. Perfect weather was in store for the 100 players who participated at Kierland Golf Club, host site of the PGA Club Championship. The golf course was in immaculate shape, with firm fairways and greens that would prove to be a challenge but would also surrender low scores for those who played well. Universal Retirement was on hand to support the 100 player field.
In Division 1, Ryan Heinz (Phoenix) and Eloy Rodriguez (Southern California) separated themselves from the field. Heinz jumped out to an early lead on Saturday, posting a 2-under par round of 70 that would give him a 3-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round over Eloy Rodriguez (73). Sunday would turn out to be a dogfight, with Rodriguez firing an impressive 5-under par 67 that included a clutch birdie on the par-5 18th to force a playoff with Ryan Heinz, who fired a second consecutive 70 to finish at 4-under par. After pars on the first playoff hole, the players moved to the tricky 6th hole where a par from Heinz was good enough to secure the victory. Sean Kovisto (Phoenix) shot 76-75 to finish in 3rd place.
In Division 2, Dave Adams (St. Louis) set the pace early with a stellar 1-under par 71 to set the pace and take a 4 shot lead over Kyle Cordoza (Southern California) heading into the final round on Sunday. Steve Wallace (Phoenix), coming off his victory at the Pacific Desert Classic at Rams Hill in February, had some work to do starting the day 7 shots behind the leader. But a stellar round of even-par 72, would put him right into the mix with Kyle Cardoza, Tyler Moore (Utah), and APT Open Champion Todd Feuerhaken (St. Louis) all had chances on the back 9 for the victory. Wallace finished steady with 7 consecutive pars to earn the victory at +6 over Kyle Cordoza and Tyler Moore, who each finished just one stroke back at +7. Todd Feuerhaken backed up his victory last week with a solid 4th place finish at +9 to round out the money.
In Division 3, Maryland’s Montez Murray jumped out to an early lead with a 7-over 79 over two local Phoenix members, Brian Czerniak and Gene Wright who trailed by 2 after rounds of 81 on Saturday. Murray (+17) would play solid on Sunday, backing up his 79 with an 82 that included a back 9 40 to secure a 2-shot victory over Simay Souvannarath (St. Louis) and Michael Riley (Utah) at +19. Fourth position would go to Jonathan Burford (Phoenix), who finished just 3-shots back at +20.
Division 4 would provide all the drama down the stretch, as first round leader Alan McGraw (Utah) would prove to be in a heated battle with Steven Beckstead (Utah). Beckstead would prevail by 1, making clutch pars on 15 and 16 to secure a one-shot victory over McGraw with a 2-day total of +23. 3rd place would go to Dolly Buenaventura (St. Louis) and Ryan Hohenshelt (Iowa) at +25 after solid finishes by both players who travelled to the desert from the Midwest. Martin Vermillion (Phoenix) and Shayne Del Rosario (Phoenix) rounded out the money with T5 finishes at +27.
In Division 5, Travis Shively (Myrtle Beach) shot a superb 87 to lead Joe Scheib (Arizona) by 2 shots heading into Sunday’s play. No one would be able to catch Shively, who’s second round 90 was good enough to secure him first place and a 2-shot win over Joe Scheib. Travis Glenn (Utah) took home 3rd place honors at +43. Esther Flora (St. Louis) and Garye LaFevers (Phoenix) tied for 4th place at +46.
In Senior Net, Steve Daniels (Charlotte) fired a stellar 5-under par 67 to earn a 2-shot victory over Steve Wallace (Phoenix), who’s 3-under net second round was good enough for solo 2nd place. St. Louis members would tie for 3rd, as Todd Feuerhaken, Dolly Buenaventura and Simay Souvannarath would each finish the 2-day event at 1-over par. 6th place was split between Troy White (Houston), Jeff Helms (Myrtle Beach), Ryan Encinas (Southern California) and Martin Vermillion (Phoenix) at +3 to round out the money.
In Open Net, Tyler Moore (Utah) shot 69-68 to finish at 7-under, and edge Eloy Rodriguez (Southern California), who shot 67 gross/66 net in the second round to finish 1 shot behind in solo 2nd place. Shayne Del Rosario (Phoenix) finished at 5-under, just 2 shots back in third place after an opening round net 68. The top 5 was rounded out by Sean Kovisto (Phoenix) and Ashesh Patel (Phoenix) who tied at +3.
The tour heads to the world-famous Streamsong Resort in Florida for the APT Players Championship to be held May 25th-27th. The 54-hole event is the premier event on the APT Regular-season schedule, where 120 players will compete in a sold out field for a $12,000 prize pool!
