Tournament Champions
Almost $5,000 in prizes were up for grabs on Sunday as a sold-out field of 80 golfers took to The Club at Brookstone for the first tournament of the 2024 calendar year on the Upstate Amateur Players Tour. Designed by the players, for the players, the Upstate Amateur Players Tour offers golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete for cash and VISA prizes.
With a sprawling 18-hole Tom Jackson designed layout, The Club at Brookstone, located in Anderson South Carolina off I-85, is sure to provide golfers with an enjoyable, challenging, and fun Upstate golf experience. The club is also regarded as one of the premier public courses in the Upstate.
Here’s a breakdown of Sunday’s tournament at The Club at Brookstone:
Division 1 – Charles Hartley used a birdie on the par-five 18th hole to solidify his spot atop the leaderboard in Division 1 on Sunday with a round of 75. Brandt Howard finished runner-up with a round of 77, which included three birdies.
Zack Boyd and Nicholas Politis tied for third place as both players recorded a round of 78. Boyd made three birdies in four holes on the front nine as Politis found his groove late in the round with three birdies on the back nine.
Brandon Pearson shot 79 and rounded out the top-five. Pearson’s round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-four 9th hole in route to shooting just here over par on the front nine.
Senior Division 1 – Charles Hartley’s round of 75 was also good enough to win Senior Division 1 on Sunday, defeating Brandt Howard by two strokes. Howard shot 77, which included two birdies on the back nine. Howard closed his round with four pars and a birdie on the 18th hole.
Division 2 – Carlos Santana prevailed in a playoff on Sunday after carding a round of 81 in Division 2. Santana defeated James Teston in the playoff. Santana reached the playoff thanks to three back nine birdies, including one on the par-five 18th hole.
Teston finished second as his round got off to a steady start, playing his first four holes in even par. Teston shot just two over par in the outward nine.
Tony White and Denver Hubert tied for third place with rounds of 83. White and Hubert both made two birdies on the day to notch the third-place finish. Phil VanGeersdaelen rounded out the top-five with a round of 85.
Senior Division 2 – While James Teston fell short in a playoff in Division 2 on Sunday, his round of 81 was enough to win Senior Division 2 by two strokes. Teston made an impressive five pars and a birdie on the front nine to get his round off to a great start.
Tony White used a pair of back nine birdies to shoot 83 and finish runner-up in Senior Division 2. Phil VanGeersdaelen shot 85 to finish third. Mike Hubert and Matthew Hendon rounded out the top-five with rounds of 87.
Division 3 – Blake House used a pair of birdies to reach a playoff, and eventually win Division 3 on Sunday with a round of 81. House was tied with Tommy Boyter after 18 holes as both players shot nine over par. House prevailed in the playoff as Boyter finished runner-up.
Matt Miller shot 83 as did Chris Helton to finish tied for third place. Miller made two back nine birdies as Helton found a pair of bridies on the front nine. Kevin Satterfield finished in fifth place with a round of 85, highlighted by a birdie on the par-five 18th hole.
Senior Division 3 – Blake House’s round of 81 was also good enough to earn him first place honors in Senior Division 3 on Sunday. House edged Kevin Satterfield by four strokes as Satterfield finished runner-up after posting a round of 85.
Doug Dietz and Myron Samuels both shot 88 to tie for third place in the division. Dietz and Samuels each made a birdie on the front nine during the round. Lawrence Daniels shot 89 and rounded out the top-five.
Division 4 – Kevin Hennings emerged from a crowded field of competitors in Division 4 to win on Sunday with a round of 81. Hennings score bettered second place finisher Pete Brushaber by four strokes. Hennings shot two over par on the front nine, using a birdie on the par-five 6th hole and five more pars on the outward nine.
Scott Bryant shot 88 to finish in third place, followed by Gene Mason and Shane Baldwin who shot 90 and 91, respectively.
Senior Division 4 – While Pete Brushaber came up just short in Division 4, his round of 85 earned him the top spot in Senior Division 4 on Sunday. Brushaber played the back nine in six over par, using a birdie on the par-four 15th hole.
Scott Bryant finished three shots back with a round of 88. Gene Mason shot 90 to finish in third place. Peter Fahey and Curtis Baugh rounded out the top-five in Senior Division 4 with rounds of 92 to tie for fourth place.
Division 5 – Danny Sullivan benefited from five pars on the back nine, creating some serious separation from the rest of the field to win Division 5 on Sunday with a round of 89. Sullivan outpaced runners-up Michael Shirley and Dick Jenkins by eight shots.
Shirley and Jenkins finished tied for second with rounds of 97. Gary Schnoor shot 99 to finish fifth as Eric Barnes rounded out the top-five with a round of 100.
Senior Division 5 – Danny Sullivan’s round of 89 was also enough to claim the top spot in Senior Division 5 on Sunday. Sullivan shot six over par on the back nine to put himself atop the leaderboard. Dick Jenkins finished runner-up with a round of 97 as Tim Kunkle finished third after posting a round of 103.
