Competitors on the Upstate Amateur Tour agreed Saturday’s tournament at the Currahee Club was well worth the drive to Tocca, GA as the field enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the Tom Fazio designed course.

More than $5,000 was up for grabs on the challenging 18-hole championship layout. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, just across the South Carolina state line, Currahee is regarded as one of the premier clubs in the area. The course, designed by Fazio, ranges all the way to 7,500 yards from the back tees.

Currahee offers a challenging, yet rewarding, experience for players of all skill levels. The course is designed in a way to capture the natural beauty of the area and features several steep elevation changes throughout the golf course, noticeable immediately on the first tee.

The Upstate Amateur Players Tour travels the Upstate of South Carolina, and portions of North Carolina and Georgia, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of ten different divisions. The Upstate Amateur Players Tour is designed by the players, for the players, and aims to provide a fun-filled, world-class experience for their players in each event.

Here’s a breakdown of the results from Saturday’s tournament by division:

Division 1 – Brandon Pearson and Cole Price separated themselves from the rest of the field in Division 1 on Saturday, but 18 holes could not determine a winner between the two front runners who carded rounds of 71. In the end, it was Pearson who prevailed to claim the top spot.

Pearson’s steady day included three birdies, two of which came in his first five holes. Price, who finished runner-up, made a back-nine charge with a pair of birdies to tie for the lead.

Brandt Howard tied for the most birdies in the division with four, as he posted a round of 79. Howard made three birdies on the front nine, including back-to-back birdies on the second and third holes.

TJ Lee also made four birdies as he finished in fourth place with a round of 80. He made consecutive birdies to close the front nine on Nos. eight and nine.

Davis Sires and Christpher White rounded out the top-five in the division in a tie for fifth place with rounds of 81.

Division 2 – Carlos Santana used two birdies on his final three holes to outlast a crowded field of 20 golfers to win Division 2 on Saturday with a round of 76. Santana’s steady day featured four birdies, including three on the back nine.

Joe Hamacher and Logan Pendergrass tied for second place with rounds of 77. Hamacher found his groove on the front nine, making seven straight pars en route to his runner-up finish. Pendergrass made two birdies on the day, both of which came early on the back nine.

Jake Medlin made two consecutive birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 to finish fourth after carding a round of 78. Andy Murrow rounded out the top-five with a round of 79 to finish fifth.

Senior Division 2 – While Joe Hamacher came up just a shot short in Division 2, his round of 77 was enough to earn him the top honors in Senior Division 2 on Saturday. Hamacher made 13 pars during his round, including seven in a row on the front nine.

Andy Murrow shot 79 to finish second. Murrow made two birdies on the day, both of which came on the front nine. Darrell Johnson led the division with four birdies on the day as he carded a round of 80 to finish third. Johnson made three birdies in a four-hole stretch on the back nine.

Bob Grove and Kevin Satterfield tied for fourth place, rounding out the top-five with rounds of 85.

Division 3 – Eight players finished within four shots of the winner in Division 3 on Saturday, as Shawn Powers emerged victorious when the dust settled with a round of 81. Powers made four birdies on the day, including two down the stretch that proved crucial in his victory.

John Anderson finished runner-up with a round of 82. Anderson’s highlight of the round came on the par-three fourth hole where he made birdie. A.J Lee, Dan Ahlers, and Andy Maestas rounded out the top-five with rounds of 83.

Lee got off to a hot start, making par on six of his first seven holes. Ahlers made three birdies on the day, including two on the back nine.

Senior Division 3 – Shawn Powers made it two-for-two on Saturday as his round of 81 was also good enough to win Senior Division 3. Powers birdied both the back-nine par threes to shoot 39 on the back nine to win.

Andy Maestas finished in second place, as his round featured a birdie on the par-five 16th hole. Sonny Smith came home third with a score of 84. Smith pared six of his first eight holes of the day.

Dan Eastep and Jim Robson tied for fourth place with rounds of 87.

Division 4 – Seven pars on the back nine helped Jimmy Sullivan reach the playoff in Division 4 as he would go on to win in a playoff over Mike Meetze. Sullivan pared all but two holes on the back nine to shoot 38 and climb to the top of the leaderboard.

Meetze finished second as his round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-four 13th hole. Kip Moore finished third with a round of 85, which included a birdie on the par-four 14th hole.

Bill Hiter and Charlie Warstler rounded out the top-five with rounds of 86 and 88, respectively.

Senior Division 4 – Jimmy Sullivan’s victory in Senior Division 4 on Saturday was a lot less stressful than Division 4 as the Greenville, SC native shot 83 to sweep the division. Sullivan found his groove on the back nine with seven pars and just two bogeys.

Kip Moore finished second in the division after carding a round of 85. Bill Hiter took advantage of the par-four 15th hole as he made birdie to shoot 86 and finish third. Scott Bryant finished fourth with a round of 89, as Steve Thomas rounded out the top-five after posting 91.

Division 5 – Danny Sullivan overcame a challenging start to shoot 94 and win Division 5 on Saturday. Sullivan rebounded with a par on the third hole, before two more on Nos. five and eight to shoot 47 on the front nine.

Dick Jenkins shot 96 to finish runner-up. Vern Verna shot 97 to finish in third place, highlighted by a birdie on the par-five 16th hole. Tim Kunkel and Wyatt Fulbright shot 100 to round out the top-five in a tie for fourth place.

Senior Division 5 – Danny Sullivan made it a clean sweep of Division 5 on Saturday as his round of 94 also earned him the top honors in Senior Division 5. Sullivan defeated second-place finisher Dick Jenkins by two shots.

Vern Verna finished third with a round of 97 as Tim Kunkel and Bill Turner rounded out the top-five with rounds of 100 and 104, respectively.
