2024 Orangeburg Golf Tournament Results

A sold-out field of competitors were treated to a round of golf at Orangeburg Country Club on Tuesday as the Charleston Amateur Players Tour hosted its tournament at one of the top-50 courses in the state.  

Built in 2009 and designed by award-winning architect Richard Mandell, the course offers a challenging test for golfers, while featuring lush fairways, tall pine trees, and deep bunkers. The course also features views of the Edisto River. The course is rated #45 overall in South Carolina, yet it ranks inside the top-five in the Midlands area.  

The Charleston Amateur Players Tour travels the Lowcountry of South Carolina, and portions of Georgia, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of ten different divisions at some of the best courses in the area. The players compete for cash and VISA gift card prizes, along with an optional cash skins game.  

Here’s a breakdown of the results from Tuesday’s tournament: 

Division 1 – Eric Goodell used two back-nine birdies to claw his way into a tie for first place before he would prevail in a playoff over Nicholas Politis as both players carded rounds of 75. Goodell birdied the par-five 11^th hole before another birdie on the par-three 12^th hole.  

Politis steady round of 75 included consecutive birdies on the front nine. Politis pared seven of the holes on the inward stretch to reach the playoff.  

Kevin Berry finished third with a round of 77 that featured two birdies. Britton Smith followed him in fourth place after carding a 78. Michael Huh rounded out the top-five with a score of 80. 

Senior Division 1 – Eric Goodell had a lot less stress in Senior Division 1 on Tuesday, as his round of 75 was more than enough to claim the top spot. Goodell shot 40 on the front nine, before consecutive birdies on the back brought him to two-over par.  

Greg Moore finished second in the division with a round of 81. Moore started strong on the front nine, taking the lead in the division by one stroke to the back nine. Three bogeys in his first four holes on the back nine dropped him to second place.  

Division 2 – Travis Wartluft avoided the big numbers on Tuesday, making twelve pars and recording no worse than a bogey en route to shooting 77 and winning Division 2. Wartluft’s lone birdie of the day came on the par-five second hole as he settled into the round.  

Mike Hubert and Chuck Bell were in close pursuit, as the two tied for second place with rounds of 79. Hubert recorded seven pars on the front nine to shoot 38 as Bell’s highlight of the round came on the massive, par-five 18^th hole as he made birdie.  

Sean Mason got off to a hot start with two birdies in his first five holes, as he tied with Sam Lewis to round out the top-five with both players posting rounds of 80. Lewis took advantage of the par-five 11^th hole on the back nine with a birdie to climb into a tie for fourth place.  

Senior Division 2 – Travis Wartluft made it two-for-two on Tuesday as his round of 77 also took the top honors in Senior Division 2. Wartluft shot 38 on the front nine before carding a 39 on the challenging inward stretch.  

Mike Hubert and Chuck Bell tied for second place with rounds of 79. Hubert stood atop the leaderboard early in the round as he pared seven of his first eight holes.  

Sean Mason finished fourth with a score of 80. Mason found his groove on the back nine, making six pars in a seven-hole stretch on his way towards the clubhouse. Kevin Lyles rounded out the top-five with a round of 82.  

Division 3 – Brad Hillman positioned himself nicely with a one-over par round of 37 on the front as he maintained his lead to win Division 3 on Tuesday with a round of 78. Hillman birdied the par-five second hole to kickstart his round.  

Scott Flenner finished two strokes behind, as he posted a round of 80. Flenner birdied his first hole of the day en route to a round of 39 on the front nine to trail Hillman by two.  

Tony Mizzell finished third with a score of 82, followed by Chase Smith in fourth place after posting an 83. Smith made two birdies during his round, both of which came in his last four holes.  

A.J. Lee rounded out the top five with a round of 84. Lee settled into his round nicely, playing his first six holes in just one over par.  

Senior Division 3 – While Tony Mizzell came up just short in Division 3 on Tuesday, his round of 82 was enough to earn him the top honors in Senior Division 3. Mizzell made four consecutive pars on the front nine to settle in atop the leaderboard.  

Cliff Marcum and John Benton were the closest challengers, as the two tied for second place with scores of 86. Benton led the division with three birdies on the day, including two on the back nine. Benton’s final birdie came on the challenging par-five closing hole.  

Allen Morrell and Travis Blackwell rounded out the top five with rounds of 89 and 91, respectively.  

Division 4 – Erik Von Nessen got off to a sizzling start en route to shooting 74 and winning comfortably in Division 4 on Tuesday. Von Nessen shot two under par on the front nine, with two birdies and seven pars on the outward stretch.  

J.P. Perron finished second with a round of 85. Perron took advantage of the par-five second hole as he shot 41 on the front none. Big Al Reynolds, Kenneth Johnson, and Cooter Douglas all tied for third place with rounds of 87. Johnon made birdie on his first hole of the day as Douglas made birdie on the par-four fifth hole.  

Senior Division 4 – J.P. Perron wasted no time settling into his round, birding the second hole to set the stage for the rest of his day as his round of 85 earned him the top honors in Senior Division 4. Perron cleared the rest of the field by two shots.  

Big Al Reynolds and Cooter Douglas tied for second place with rounds of 87, followed by Thomas Hart, Steve Daniels, and Glenn Pound – who all tied for fourth place with rounds of 95. 

Division 5 – Leroy Anderson’s round of 95 was good enough to earn him the top spot in Division 5 on Saturday. Anderson held off Bubba Atkinson, who shot 99 to finish runner-up.  

Aaron Tardif shot 102 to finish third, followed by Brendan Daniels and Thomas Yarbrough – who both shot 103 to finish tied for fourth place.
