Amateur Players Tour of Southwest Florida Tournament Recap
Spring Run Golf Club – August 24, 2024
On August 24, the Southwest Florida Amateur Players Tour chapter visited Spring Run, a private course in Bonita Springs. Players were treated to near perfect course conditions for our final elevated event before the local finals in a couple of weeks! Fairways were flawless, greens were smooth and fast and the weather, while hot, was great as well! 28 players came to enjoy the day and the spectacular course. Highlights of the day included:
- Division 1: Chase Bertrand started the day off with a birdie and lead Henry Abbott by 1 shot and Michael Smith by 3 after the first nine! Bertrand remained consistent on the back nine as did Smith, but they both lost ground to Bertrand who finished with a 5 over 77 to take his second win in a row!
- Division 2: Daren Green and Nick Westbrook took turns leading on the first nine with Green eventually taking a 2-shot lead to the back. Green was able to turn in a back nine 39 and he came away with his second win in a row as well. These two have gone head-to-head all season long!
- Division 3: This one saw 4 different people have the lead at some point during the day! After the first nine, Marcus Clifford and Frank Hoffman were tied with three others just a stroke or two behind! On the second nine, Clifford stumbled early, and Stephen Leadbetter and Waymon Fuselier moved up with some consistent play. However, it was not enough to overtake Frank Hoffman who was able to hang on for the 1 shot victory over Waymon Fuselier who took second.
- Division 4: After the first nine holes, Andy Halek had a 3-shot lead over Gregg Carr and 4 over Jay Shockey. On the second nine, Halek would stumble early, and Gregg Carr would take advantage and got to his last hole with a 1 shot lead. Carr would take a double-bogey and then have to wait and see if Halek could par the last hole. Halek would play the last needing a par to win and he drained a clutch 20-footer to do just that and get the win!
- Division 5: This one was close all day with 4 players making the turn within 3 shots of each other! Rusty Lingenfelter and Jimmy Bramlett would lead after the first nine, but Andrew Lampert and Greg Gastfield were right on their heels! Gastfield would turn in the best score on the back, but both he and Rusty Lingenfelter would come up one shot short of Jimmy Bramlett who had two triples to close out his round and make it very close at the end!
- Senior Net: 9 out of the 17 eligible players participated in the Senior Net game, with our D3 champion, Frank Hoffman getting the Senior Net win shooting -1! Taking second was Michael Smith, just 1-shot back at even par!
A huge thank you goes out to Jeff Carter and the entire staff at Spring Run Golf Club for having the course in such awesome condition for our event! They treated us like royalty and even gave us our own room for scoring and hanging out!
