Hot temps, low scores, and no room for error
The Central Illinois summer swing stayed hot as we rolled into Savoy, IL and teed it up at the U of I Orange Course.
A familiar venue to many, the course demanded control and course management — and it gave us birdies, eagles, and big paydays in return.
Division 1 – Stephen Dunn (Central IL)
It was a hometown win for Stephen Dunn, who stayed steady on his way to a +2 (74) finish. But it didn’t come without pressure. Back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16 cracked the door open for Scott Prosser, who closed with bogeys of his own, falling short with a 76. Dunn sealed the deal with a clutch finish on 17 and 18.
Purse: $125 | 3 Players
Division 2 – RJ Trimpe (Central IL)
RJ Trimpe was in control early and made it count with a division-winning EVEN PAR 72, helped by a birdie on hole 5 that cashed both a division skin and a super skin. He held off Mitch Myers who carded a 74 to finish solo 2nd. First-time player Jacob Kern, was impressive in his debut with a T-3 at 78. STL’s Kent Van Cleve also made some noise with a birdie on 18, earning him both a division and super skin payout.
Purse: $280 | 16 Players
Division 3 – Kirk Stuaan (CIL) & Jim Brown (CIL)
Kirk Stuaan and Jim Brown battled their way to matching 79s, with the leaderboard hanging in the balance until the very last group. Late entry Jeremy Miller, paired in the final tee time, kept the pressure high with a strong 80 (T-3) that included a birdie start and a clutch eagle for a division and super skin. Visiting Indy chapter member Ross Richardson also tied for 3rd.
Purse: $320 | 18 Players
Other D3 Skin Winners:
• Rick Johnson (STL) – 2 skins
• Bradley Crawford (CIL) – 1 skin
• Thomas Margetich (CIL) – 1 skin
Division 4 – Ed Watkins (CIL)
Ed Watkins delivered one of his best rounds of the season, firing an 85 (41–44) and collecting two division skins. With a back and forth affair, cart-mate Dewey Wills ends his day with a triple bogey on 17. Aaron Holman, a guest from the Columbus chapter, was one of four players to finish just two back at 87. Brandon Merano picked up two skins, while Sammy Taylor, Dewey Wills, and Thomas Agnew (STL) each secured a skin of their own.
Purse: $200 | 13 Players
Division 5 – Myron Schroeder (CIL)
Myron Schroeder earned another D5 victory with a solid round of 95. Myron Schroeder edged out Mike Wisdom 2nd place.
With blowups looming on every turn, his steady play down the stretch, Myron captured another D5 win in a tight three-player field.
Purse: $125 | 3 Players
Senior Net – Kent Van Cleve (STL)
Kent Van Cleve came out on top with a net score of -2 (70), edging out both Mitch Myers and Kirk Stuaan at 71 and 72 respectively. Kent’s clutch birdie on 18 gave him the title.
Purse: $180 | 9 Players
Closest to the Pin – Jason Holden (CIL)
Jason Holden dropped a dart to 2 feet 11 inches — good enough to lock down CTP honors and the payout. Well played! $450
