CIL Amateur Players Tour – Weibring Recap (July 6, 2025)
NORMAL, IL – The CIL Amateur Players Tour returned to Weibring Golf Club on July 6th for one of the most dramatic events of the season. Across six competitive divisions, players battled heat, pressure, and the challenging Illinois State University layout. From comeback stories to sudden-death playoffs, this event had everything fans could ask for.
Division 1 – Samulak Wins Playoff After Anderson’s Back-Nine Heroics
Henry Samulak (Lindenhurst, IL) outlasted Josh Anderson (Sidney, IL) in a sudden-death playoff to capture the Division 1 crown after both posted 75 (+4) in regulation. Samulak built his round with birdies on holes 8 and 15 and limited damage elsewhere to hold steady against a tough field. Anderson’s day was a roller coaster. After a triple bogey on hole 2 and a double on 6, he made the turn in 43. But his back nine was sensational, featuring birdies on 10, 12, and 13 en route to a bogey-free 32 (-3). His comeback was valiant, but Samulak closed the door in extras.
Division 2 – Myers Finishes Birdie-Birdie to Win in Playoff
Mitch Myers (Argenta, IL) delivered one of the clutchest finishes of the day, closing with birdies on 17 and 18 to shoot even-par 71 and force a playoff with Jason Anglin (Normal, IL). In extras, Myers kept the momentum going to secure the win. He turned in 38 but stormed home with a 33 on the back, the lowest closing nine in Division 2. Anglin played consistent, mistake-free golf throughout but couldn’t match Myers’ fireworks down the stretch.
Division 3 – Carr Edges Gibson and Crawford in Three-Way Playoff
Craig Carr (Effingham, IL) captured the Division 3 title at Weibring Golf Club in a hard-fought three-way playoff, finishing with a 78 (+7).
Carr’s front nine included a birdie on the par-5 2nd hole and eight pars, making the turn at 35 (−1) — the cleanest front side of the entire field. The back nine presented more challenges, with a double bogey on 12 and bogeys on 13, 15, and 18, totaling a 43 (+8). Tied at 78 were Bill Gibson (Jacksonville, IL) and Bradley Crawford (Bloomington, IL), both of whom showed grit down the stretch. In the playoff, Carr’s calm under pressure carried him to victory.
Division 4 – Tipsword Triumphs After Surgery with Gritty Win
Just days removed from surgery, Bob Tipsword (Tolono, IL) delivered an inspiring performance at Weibring, shooting 80 (+9) to claim the Division 4 title by a single stroke. Tipsword’s front-nine 42 included a double bogey on the 1st and bogeys on holes 4, 6, and 9, but he kept his composure and found his rhythm on the back. His closing 38 featured pars on each of the final five holes (14–18) — a stretch that ultimately made the difference. The victory is a testament to not just his game, but his resilience — bouncing back from a serious medical procedure to return to competition and come out on top. He edged out a tough field, including runner-up Cleat Davis (Taylorville, IL).
Division 5 – Schroeder Rises to the Top at Weibring
Myron Schroeder (Downs, IL) earned a hard-fought victory in Division 5 at Weibring Golf Club on July 6, posting a winning score of 87 (+16). Schroeder edged out the field with steady play down the stretch to capture another Amateur Players Tour title. Keith Schumacher (Mason City, IL) finished solo second with a round of 90 (+19), just three shots back of the lead. Mitch Wisdom (Springfield, IL) rounded out the podium with a 93 (+22) to take third. Schroeder’s victory continues a strong season in Division 5, showing poise under pressure as he managed tough conditions to come away with the win.
Senior Net – Konuch Goes Low at Weibring
Michael Konuch (Maryville, IL) fired a dazzling net 65 (-6) to win the Senior Net division at Weibring Golf Club, edging out a competitive leaderboard with steady, mistake-free golf. Konuch’s round included a scorching front nine and timely birdies that gave him just enough breathing room down the stretch. Just one stroke back was Keith Schumacher (Mason City, IL), who posted an impressive net 66 (-5) to finish solo second. Mitch Myers (Argenta, IL) claimed third with a strong net 68 (-3) effort. A three-way tie for fourth at net 69 (-2) featured Dan Punkay (Champaign, IL), Jason Stone (St. Peters, MO), and Bob Tipsword (Tolono, IL) — all of whom put together quality rounds in one of the deepest Senior Net fields of the season. Konuch’s victory adds another highlight to an already strong 2025 campaign and solidifies his position as a top contender moving into the second half of the season.
