Competitors on the Charleston Amateur Players Tour did not miss out on a rare chance to play at Orangeburg Country Club Tuesday, as the tour hosted its second tournament of the week – starting the month of July in style.
Nestled along the banks of the Edisto River, Orangeburg Country Club offers one of the Midlands’ premier golfing experiences. Built in 2009 and designed by award-winning golf course architect Richard Mandell, the course has quickly earned a reputation for its challenging layout and scenic beauty.
Tuesday, Golfers enjoyed the lush fairways framed by towering pine trees and strategically placed deep bunkers, creating a test of skill and strategy for players of all levels. The riverfront views add a picturesque element to the round, making the course both visually striking and technically demanding.
While Orangeburg Country Club is ranked No. 45 overall in South Carolina, it consistently places among the top five courses in the Midlands region. Its combination of thoughtful design and natural landscape has helped it stand out as a destination for both competitive and recreational golfers across the state.
The Charleston Amatuer Players Tour travels the Lowcountry of South Carolina, along with portions of Georgia, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete for cash and VISA gift card prizes across 10 different divisions. The tour is designed by the players, for the players, and creates a world-class golfing experience each tournament for its competitors.
Here’s a breakdown of the results from Tuesday’s tournament by division:
Division 1 – Chase Sturkie carded four birdies on the day as he posted a round of 73 to win on Tuesday. The Lexington, SC native opened his round in style with a birdie on the first hole. He added two more on the seventh and eighth holes to shoot even par, 36, on the front nine.
James Williams finished second with a round of 76. Williams steady day included 15 pars, eight of which came on the back nine. Marty Bunch and Zake Masterson tied for third place with rounds of 79. Eric Goodell rounded out the top five with a round of 80.
Senior Division 1 – Marty Bunch and Eric Goodell found themselves locked in a tight battle down the stretch, as in the end it was Bunch who claimed the victory with a round of 79. Bunch’s round was highlighted by his lone birdie on the par-four 13th hole.
Goodell finished second with a round of 80, just a single stroke behind Bunch. Goodell made two birdies on the day, including one on the par-four 16th hole. Kevin Berry rounded out the division with an 84 in third place.
Division 2 – John Tompkins outlasted a crowded field of challengers in Division 2, firing a round of 73 to win by three strokes. Tompkins made two birdies on the front nine, taking advantage of the two par fives. His back nine included eight pars and a birdie on the par-four 16th hole.
AJ Lee finished second with a round of 76, fresh off his victory over the weekend at Oak Hills. Lee recorded two birdies on the day, including one on the par-four seventh hole en route to a round of 38 on the front nine.
Judd Dye finished third with a round of 77, followed by Hank Stolz in fourth with a 78. Dye made four birdies on the day, two on each side, as Stolz led the division with five during his round.
Casey Robinson rounded out the top five in the division with a round of 79.
Senior Division 2 – Casey Robinson’s steady round that included 11 pars proved to be enough to take the top spot in Senior Division 2 as the Walterboro, SC native carded a round of 79. During a nine-hole stretch Tuesday, Robinson made seven pars, cementing his position atop the leaderboard.
Troy D Belton and David Banks were close behind in a tie for second place with rounds of 81. Belton’s highlight of the round came on the par-five fifth hole where he made birdie as Banks recorded two birdies on the back nine during his round.
Steve Smyth and Kevin Lyle rounded out the top five in the division with rounds of 82 and 84, respectively.
Division 3 – Mark Lytle laid the groundwork for his victory on the front nine, making three birdies en route to a round of 80 to win Division 3 on Tuesday. The Anderson, SC native birdied Nos. 1, 2, and 8 as he recorded a round of 39 on the front to clear the field by one stroke.
Mark Stroupe finished second, just one stroke behind with a round of 81. Stroupe played his best golf on the front nine, making birdie on the par-five eighth hole to shoot 38 on the front.
John Benton finished third after posting a round of 82, followed by Michael Shirley in fourth with a score of 84. Myron Samuels finished fifth, posting a round of 86.
Senior Division 3 – Mark Lytle made it a clean sweep on Tuesday as his round of 80 was also enough to take the top honors in Senior Division 3. Lytle made three birdies on the front nine, positioning himself atop the leaderboard as he recorded the pair of victories.
Mark Stroupe finished second with a round of 81, highlighted by a pair of birdies. Stroupe birdied two par fives, Nos. 8 and 11, during his round that included a score of 38 on the front nine.
John Benton finished third with a score of 82, followed by Myron Samuels in fourth with a round of 86.
Division 4 – Randy Carmichael fired a round of 85, clearing the field by two strokes to win Division 4 on Tuesday. The Walterboro, SC native made nine pars during the round, including four in a six-hole stretch on the front nine.
A crowded group tied for second place with rounds of 87, including: Casey Price, Jeff Orr, and Tracy Franklin, whose round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-three 17th hole.
Rally Reynolds and Calvin Carter tied for fifth place with rounds of 88. Reynolds led the division in birdies, making two.
Senior Division 4 – Randy Carmichael was a perfect two-for-two on Tuesday, also claiming the top spot in Senior Division 4 with a round of 85. Carmichael played his best golf on the front nine, making five pars and carding a round of 42.
Casey Price and Tracy Franklin tied for second place, two shots behind with rounds of 87. Price shot 42 on the back nine, paring holes 10-12. Franklin’s highlight of the round came when he made birdie on the 17th hole.
Rally Reynolds and Calvin Carter rounded out the top five in the division with rounds of 88 in a tie for fourth place.
Division 5 – Bill Turner made six pars in a seven-hole stretch on the back nine, paving the way to his victory with a round of 89 in Division 5 on Tuesday. The Inman, SC native made nine pars on the day, six of which came on the back nine.
Leroy Anderson finished second, four strokes behind after carding a round of 93. Brendan Daniels came home third with a round of 96. Vern Verna and Glenn Pound rounded out the top five in a tie for fourth place with scores of 99.
Senior Division 5 – Bill Turner’s victory in Senior Division 5 came with a little less stress as his round of 89 cleared the field by 10 strokes on Tuesday. Turner started on the 11th hole, and opened with six pars in his first seven holes, setting the tone for the rest of his round.
Vern Verna and Glenn Pound tied for second place with rounds of 99. Verna made four pars on the day, two on each side. Thomas Yarbrough and Barry Crocker tied for fourth place with rounds of 100.
