Tournament Champions
Golfers on the Charleston Amateur Players Tour spent their long Memorial Day weekend in Summerville, competing on a course voted as one of the best in the area as the tour hosted its tournament at Legend Oaks Golf Club.
Located within thirty minutes of downtown Charleston, Legend Oaks is a semi-private golf course designed by Scott Pool. Legend Oaks is surrounded by the natural beauty of 300-year-old majestic live oak trees, towering pines and a whole host of Lowcountry wildlife. The championship golf course provides a challenge for all levels of players.
Legend Oaks won the 2010 South Carolina Golf Course of the Year award as selected by the Golf Course Owners Association. It was also chosen by the readers of the Charleston Business Journal as one of the Top Three Lowcountry Courses.
The Charleston Amateur Players Tour travels the Lowcountry of South Carolina, along with portions of Georgia, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete across ten different divisions, including senior divisions as well. Each event features cash and VISA gift card prizes for the winners, along with an optional cash skins game. The tour is designed by the players, for the players, ensuring a world-class experience for competitors during each event.
Here’s a breakdown of the results from Saturday’s tournament:
Division 1 – Rodric Overholt kept his scorecard clean on the back nine, making a birdie on the par-four 10th hole followed by a steady string of eight pars, as he earned the top spot in Division 1 on Saturday with a round of 71. The Abbeville, SC native used two birdies on the front nine to offset a double bogey on the par-three third hole. The double bogey would be Overholt’s only blemish of the day on the scorecard.
John Masotti posted a round of 72, finishing in second place, just one shot behind Overholt. Masotti birdied the par-five fourth hole as he shot 37 on the front. He ended his round in style with a birdie on the par-five closing hole.
Jeremy Goodman finished third with a score of 76, followed by Jason Myers in fourth place with a round of 75. Brett Coddington and Dylan Murakami rounded out the top five in the division, in a tie for fifth place with rounds of 85.
Division 2 – A.J. Lee pieced together a stellar back nine, making three birdies en route to a round of 73 to win Division 2. Lee bounced back after a double bogey on the front nine with a birdie on the par-four seventh hole. He found his groove on the back nine, playing his first four holes of the side in two under par. Lee also made birdie on the par-three 17th hole to solidify his victory.
Chuck Bell and Steven Eady were close behind, finishing tied for second place with rounds of 75. Bell played the front nine in even par, making birdie on the par-four second hole. Eady got off to a red-hot start, birding his first two holes.
Sean Mason and Cory Crews finished tied for fourth place, rounding out the top five with rounds of 77. Mason had a birdie on each side, including one on the par-five 18th hole. Crews made two birdies in a three-hole stretch.
Senior Division 2 – Eighteen holes of golf proved to not be enough to determine a winner as Chuck Bell and Steven Eady were both tied with rounds of 75. In the end, it was Bell who emerged victorious in the playoff.
Bell made seven pars on the front nine and offset his only bogey with a birdie on the par-four second hole. The two were tied making the turn, as Eady opened with two quick birdies on the first two holes before two bogeys came on Nos. seven and eight. The two remained tied as Eady made eight pars and a triple bogey on the back nine with Bell making three bogeys.
Kevin Hoffmann finished third with a round of 80. Hoffmann made two birdies on the day, the first of which came on the dogleg right seventh hole. He also took advantage of the par-four 12th hole.
Division 3 – David Banks positioned himself nicely with a round of 38 on the front nine as he safely secured the title in Division 3 with a round of 82. Banks cleared the field by three shots, as he found his groove midway through the front nine. The Branchville, SC native birdied the fourth and seventh holes to shoot two over on the front nine.
Adam Corley finished runner-up with a round of 86. Corley made eight pars on the day, five of which came on the opening nine, including three in a row to close the outward stretch.
Mike Howell and Myron Samuels finished tied for third place with rounds of 90. Howell made two birdies on the day, the last of which came on the par-four 10th hole.
Senior Division 3 – David Banks’ victory in Senior Division 3 came with a little less stress as his round of 82 was enough to secure the sweep of the weekend. Banks made three birdies on the day, including two on the front nine, coming on the fourth and seventh holes.
Myron Samuels finished in second place with a round of 90. Samuels round included five pars, three of which came in a five-hole stretch on the front nine.
Division 4 – Andy Dumont’s round of 84 included scores of 42 on both the front and back nine, as the Johs Island, SC native’s steady day earned him the top honors in Division 4. Dumont settled into his round with two birdies on the front nine, taking advantage of the par-four fifth hole and the seventh hole. Dumont also played his final six holes in just two over par to secure the victory.
Brian Gregor finished second with a round of 88, four shots behind Dumont. Gregor made four pars on the front nine to settle into his round. Calvin Carter shot 91 to finish third, followed by a three-way tie for fourth place including Randy Poplin, Linette Coddington, and Big Al Reynolds as all three posted rounds of 94.
Senior Division 4 – Andy Dumont was a perfect two-for-two on Saturday, taking home the top prize as well in Senior Division 4 with his round of 84. Dumont made three birdies on the day, the last of which came on the par-four 13th hole.
Brian Gregor finished second, followed by Calvin Carter in third as the players posted rounds of 88 and 91, respectively. Randy Poplin, Linette Coddington, and Big Al Reynolds posted rounds of 94 to finish in a tie for fourth place.
Division 5 – Brendan Daniels posted a round of 97 to claim the top spot in Division 5 on Saturday, clearing the field by five shots. Daniels round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-three 17th hole, along with two pars on the front nine.
Barry Crocker finished second with a score of 102, followed by Steven Eisenberg in third place, carding a round of 109.
Senior Division 5 – Barry Crocker’s round of 102 proved to be enough to win Senior Division 5 on Saturday. Crocker’s round included a par on the par-four 13th hole, as he carded a round of 50 on the back nine. Steven Eisenberg finished second with a round of 109.
