City Park Recap
The forecast for a few days leading up to the Mile High Denver Chapter of the Amateur Players Tour event at City Park had bounced all over the place with predictions of a high of 48 degrees with an 84% chance of rain as the worst scenario. Several players questioned whether the tournament would be played or cancelled. As is always the case, especially in Colorado where the weather can be all 4 seasons in 1 day, you always show up at the course and see what the weather is like.
Players were greeted with temperatures in the low 40s, but with NO rain and broken cloudy skies. All in all, the day looked pretty good with high temperatures forecast for mid-60s! Blue sky was in the future once the sun won out forcing the clouds away.
The relatively shorter, par 70 layout of the recently total redevelopment of City Park Golf Course proved to be a good test and fun track for the APT. Several Divisions were tightly contested and there was a playoff for 1st place in Division 2.
DIVISION 1: A competitive field of 6 players led the City Park tournament with the 10:00 am tee times. Dakoata Marquez (yes, his name is spelled correctly) was playing in his first Amateur Players Tour event with his cousin who also plays in Division 1. Dakoata had a 3 stroke lead after the front nine even par score of 35 over Charter Member Ryan Millican. Dakoata won going away with a 34 on the back nine for an overall score of 69 (1 under par).
DIVISION 2: The lead kept changing in Division 2 with 5 players ending with scores between 73 and 76. Kyle Johnson and Hendrik Orlowski tied with 3 over scores of 73. Kyle and Hendrik had a one hole playoff on the first hole at City Park with Kyle parring the hole for the 1 stroke victory. Fantastic competition in this Division. Scott Goossen came within ~1/4” of winning $500 on the Par 3 eighth hole with a very near Hole in One.
DIVISION 3: Another very competitive division at City Park as 4 players ended their rounds within 2 strokes of each other. Aaron Skiles won again as a multi-winner in Denver with a total of 77. John Chmara (78) and Andrew Lopez (79) both former winners and Mike Foxhoven (79) were the close competitors that had chances to win.
DIVISION 4: Trent McQueen (former winner in Denver) overcame Humberto Rivera’s lead to win this Division with a score of 87. The back nine was not friendly to Humberto who ended up with a score of 90.
DIVISION 5: Tough competition was held in this Division as well at City Park. Tad Sandoval came on to win the Division on the back nine after lead changes. Tad shot 89 for the day, followed by Wendy Fenton who fought to get over the hump for 1st place with 91. The group had a fantastic fun time for the day.
OPEN NET: This optional contest continues to be quite popular for the players. The competition was fierce with 6 players ending up with 3 strokes of each other. Hendrik Orlowski won the competition with a net 67 (3 under par), followed by Kyle Johnson and new member Michael Wong shooting 68 (2 under par).
SENIOR NET: John Chmara proved to be a great competitor to win the Senior Net going away with a 67 (3 under par). John won the optional game by 9 strokes.
NOTABLES: Scott Goossen came within ~1/4” of winning $500 on the Par 3 eighth hole with a very near Hole in One. Scott indicated this would have been his first ever HIO! His day will come soon. Birdies were plentiful at City Park with the field of 31 players shooting more than 35 birdies. Scott Goossen led the field with 4 birdies in a row on holes 7-10. Kyle Johnson, Hendrik Orlowski, Michael Wong, and Aaron Skiles followed with 3 birdies each.
FOLDS OF HONOR: Kyle Johnson won the drawing and split a $90 pot with FOH.
OVERALL: A great fall day of golf, crisp temperatures to begin the day followed by beautiful bright sunny blue skies to finish the round at the Denver Chapter’s conclusion of the Fall Season. Disappointment was in the air when players realized the snow must fly in the off season and it will be several months before we get together again for our next golf tournament.
