Columbus Amateur Players Tour – Groveport Event Recap 
Sunday, June 8th – The Links at Groveport 

The Columbus Chapter of the Amateur Players Tour held an event on Sunday, June 8th at The Links at Groveport. Formerly a private facility, the course’s tree-lined fairways, small greens, and early morning thunderstorms created tough conditions for the 37-player field. 

The Columbus Amateur Players Tour travels throughout Central Ohio, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete across ten divisions. The tour is designed by the players, for the players, with VISA gift card prizes awarded, along with an optional cash skins game. 

Tournament Results by Division 

Open Division – Division 1 
Ben Palmer of Parkersburg, WV and Bryan Bavender of Gahanna, OH battled back and forth all day, before Ben pulled away late to win with a solid round of +1 (73) and 4 strokes ahead of Bryan. This is 2 starts and 2 W’s for Ben on the 2025 season.  

Division 2 
Cathleen Wong of Parkersburg, WV made her 2025 debut in style, taking home the win and the prize money back across the Ohio River with a 77. Michael Marinangeli of Grove City, OH finished second just 1 shot back while Don Dawson and Rick Williamson were just two strokes back of the winner, rounding out the top three. 

Division 3 
Frank Machesky of Jackson, OH continued his strong play with a round of 78, winning by three shots over Shawn Snyder of Yorkville, OH, while Zach Walker who set the early pace of Bellefontaine, OH finished third. 

Division 4 
Bob Lawless of Pickerington, OH earned his second tour win of the season with a two-shot victory over Brandon Turner of Heath, OH, with Van Rome coming off a victory the day before on the Cincinnati Tour finished in third just five shots back. 

Division 5 
In a dramatic finish, 83-year-old John Lint of West Lafayette, OH sank an 18-foot putt on the 18th hole to secure a one-shot win over Ian Lilburn of Columbus, OH and Kristie Souders of Georgetown, KY made the trip back home to Central, OH to finished two strokes behind the leader. 

Senior Division Highlights 

Division 2 
Michael Marinangeli added to his Player of the Year lead in the Senior Division with a one-stroke win over Don Dawson and Rick Williamson. 

Division 3 
Frank Machesky completed the sweep, winning both the Open and Senior divisions with a dominant 9-shot victory over Ray Conley of Hilliard, OH. 

Division 5 
John Lint picked up his second win of the day with a four-stroke victory over Chuck Falter of Gahanna, OH.

The tour will now take a short break before returning with a joint event alongside the Cincinnati chapter at the beautiful and challenging Snow Hill Golf Club.
