    Competitors on the Upstate Amateur Players Tour agreed the drive to Tocca, GA was well worth it Saturday, playing at the classic Tom Fazio designed Currahee Club. 

    Nestled at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Currahee is a premier club that embodies perfection in every fairway, green, and bunker. With breathtaking panoramic views and meticulously crafted holes that showcase the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, a round at Currahee Club is a journey through golfing paradise. 

    Saturday, golfers on the Upstate Amateur Players Tour competed for over $5,000 in cash and VISA gift card prizes on a perfect day for golf.  

    The Upstate Amateur Players Tour travels the Upstate of South Carolina, along with portions of North Carolina and Georgia, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of 10 different divisions. Golfers compete for various prizes, along with an optional cash skins game.  

    Upstate Amateur Players Tour Owner and Operator Larry Lee noted the stellar shape of the course and the exceptional staff at Currahee that helped make the event possible.  

    Here’s a breakdown of the results from Saturday’s tournament by division: 

    Division 1 – John Schiemer, Kurt Waldthausen, and Randy Hodges battled to the end Saturday in Division 1 as when the dust settled, it was Schiemer who emerged victorious with a round of 78. Schiemer grabbed a lead on the front nine, birding the par-four seventh hole to shoot just two over par on the opening stretch. Waldthausen finished second with a round of 79. The Simpsonville, SC native opened with six pars in his first seven holes en route to a round of 39 on the front nine. His back nine included a stretch of five consecutive pars. Hodges finished third with a round of 81, highlighted by consecutive birdies on Nos. nine and 10. Hodges played his first six holes on the back nine in even par. Thomas Owens rounded out the top four with a score of 86. 

    Senior Division 1 – While Kurt Waldthausen came up just short in Division 1, his round of 79 was enough to win Senior Division 1 Saturday. Waldthausen played the front nine in just three over par, including six pars. He also managed to keep the card clean on the back nine to secure the victory. Randy Hodges finished runner-up with a round of 81. Hodges made a pair of birdies as he made the turn, pulling himself into a tie with Waldthausen. Thomas Owens rounded out the division in third with a round of 86, featuring three birdies in his first five holes.  

    Division 2 – An impressive round of even par on the back nine solidified Branden Smith’s victory in Division 2 with a round of 76 Saturday. After carding a 40 on the front nine, Smith made two birdies and two bogeys to shoot 36 on the inward stretch. Logan Pendergrass finished second, just one shot behind with a round of 77. Pendergrass made two birdies and an eagle, which came on the par-five 10th hole. Pendergrass fought his way to the top of the leaderboard with a round of two-under par, 32, on the back nine. Kevin Satterfield and Adam Moore finished in a tie for third place with rounds of 79. Satterfield ended his round in style, making two birdies in his final three holes. Moore also found his groove on the back nine, birding the par-five 10th and par-four 14th holes en route to a top five finish. Garrett Blyler, Chris Lombardozzi, and Blake House rounded out the top five in the division with rounds of 82 in a tie for fifth place.  

    Senior Division 2 – Kevin Satterfield used two birdies in his final three holes to secure the victory in Senior Division 2 with a round of 79. Satterfield birdied the first hole of the day before shooting 42 on the front nine. His back nine round included birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 as he shot just one-over par, 37. Blake House finished second with a score of 82. House’s highlight of the round came on the par-four ninth hole as he made birdie. Phil VanGeersdaelen finished third with a round of 84. VanGeersdaelen led the division in birdies, including back-to-back birdies on Nos. 12 and 13. John Masters and Brad Anderson shot 85 to finish in a tie for fourth place.  

    Division 3 – Dan Eastep’s eagle on the par-five opening hole was a sign of things to come as the Green Mountain, NC native shot 78 to win Division 3 Saturday. Eastep also made birdie on the par-four 11th hole, positioning himself for a strong run to the finish of the round. Bill Russell and Dean Crouch were in hot pursuit, finishing in a tie for second place after both players carded rounds of 80. Russell made a late charge, birding two of his final three holes to finish tied for second. Crouch started off strong, overcoming a double bogey on the opening hole to shoot just two-over par, 38, on the front nine. Frederick Velaquez finished fourth with a round of 81, followed by Sonny Smith in fifth after posting an 83.  

    Senior Division 3 – Dan Eastep made it a clean sweep of the weekend as his round of 78 was also enough to win Senior Division 3. Eastep’s steady round included an eagle on the par-five opening hole and a birdie on the par-four 11th. Dean Crouch finished second with a round of 80. After his stellar 37 on the front nine, Crouch made three pars on the back to finish on the podium. Sonny Smith finished third with a score of 83, featuring a birdie on the par-three 12th hole. Jeff Pauley and Travis Blackwell rounded out the top five in the division with rounds of 85 and 86, respectively.  

    Division 4 – Zach Hutchinson saved his best golf for the back nine, shooting just five-over par on the closing stretch to card a round of 89 and win Division 4 Saturday. Hutchinson shot 48 on the front nine before finding his groove on the back nine with a round of 41. Lamont Murray, Sitty Mendez, and David Croston tied for second place with rounds of 92. Murray made five pars on the front nine as Mendez started his back nine with four pars in a row. David Croston led the division in birdies with two. The first came on the par-four sixth hole as the final one came on the par-four 15th hole. Shane Baldwin, Justin Sartain, Billy Trull, Robert Gibson, and George Bright all carded rounds of 94 to finish in a tie for fifth place.  

    Senior Division 4 – FJ Felsburg was the class of the field in Senior Division 4, carding a round of 84 to win by eight strokes. The Flat Rock, NC native found his groove on the front nine, making pars on four of his final five holes on the opening stretch. Sitty Mendez and David Croston finished tied for second place after posting scores of 92. Billy Trull, Robert Gibson, and George Bright tied for fourth place to round out the top five as all three golfers shot 94.  

    Division 5 – Dusty Bright distanced himself from the field with seven pars on the day to card a round of 91 and win Division 5 Saturday. Bright pared three of his first six holes en route to a round of 45 on the front nine. Bill Turner finished second with a score of 96, highlighted by a birdie on the par-three second hole. Bruce Reeves and Danny Sullivan tied for third place with scores of 99. Dick Jenkins rounded out the top five with a round of 100 in fifth place.  

    Senior Division 5 – While Bill Turner came up just short of the top spot in Division 5, his round of 96 was enough to win Senior Division 5. Turner made the lone birdie of the division, making a two on the par-three second hole. Danny Sullivan finished in the runner-up position after posting a round of 99. Dick Jenkins shot 100 to finish third, followed by Tim Kunkel in fourth with a score of 107. Vern Verna completed the division with a round of 118.
