MILE HIGH DENVER CHAPTER OF THE AMATEUR PLAYERS TOUR
Keystone River Tournament Recap-June 1, 2025
Day 2 of the road trip to The River Course at Keystone, Colorado greeted the Mile High Denver Chapter of the APT to a fantastic setting in the Rocky Mountains. Situated at 9,280 feet above sea level, Keystone River provides players a true experience of playing golf at altitude! The morning was beautiful with a typical Colorado deep blue sky, towering snow packed peaks, and very cool temperatures in the high 30’s.
The second day of frost delay was NOT happening so the 10:00 am shotgun start was on time for 48-player field. A very typical afternoon thunderstorm did NOT materialize other than a little wind and cloudiness did occur. The clouds cleared once again with a big, beautiful sun reappearing for the finishing holes and awards ceremony.
The Sold-Out field included numerous APT players from around the entire country. Keystone hosted APT members from New York, New Hampshire (and the newly formed New England Chapter), South Carolina, Utah, Wyoming, and California. Everyone survived the altitude and had a valuable player experience at Keystone River.
The road trip (experiment) to Keystone for a two-day event was a tremendous success. Numerous families, friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, etc. travelled with the APT members and provided everyone the APT experience. Keystone will definitely be on the 2026 APT Denver schedule.
DIVISION 1: First time APT player and new Denver Chapter member Jamie “JR” Burroughs truly lit up the front nine with a 4 under par 31. At one point in the competition, JR held a 6-stroke advantage over the D1 field. Bryan Rusin shot a 38 on the front nine and improved on the back nine to shoot 37 for a total of 75. Rusin’s 75 total was great enough to overtake the leader and win the Division 1 trophy and prize money. JR Burroughs faded on the back nine and shot 77 (31-46) and found himself in a tie for 2nd place with Joshuah Thomson (38-39 = 77) of Westminster, Colorado.
DIVISION 2: In this highly tightly competitive division, Zach Rodriquez of Thornton, CO brought along his family of wife and 2 children to witness him winning D2 with a very steady round of 78 (39-39). This was extremely exciting for Zach as he hoisted the winning trophy. Rodriquez’ closest competitors were Griffin Woodall (42-41 =83) and newcomer Kurt Hinkle (46-37 = 83) from Windsor, CO and RainDance National/Pelican Lakes golf courses who tied for 2nd Place. Kurt turned his game up a few notches on the back nine shooting 37.
DIVISION 3: Division 3 former APT Denver winner Andrew Lopez was the winner of the 1st place trophy and prize money to make a clean sweep weekend! Lopez shot a 40-38 = 78 for his River Course at Keystone win. Greg DeRoeck finished an exceptionally good 2 day showing in D3 and finished winning 2nd place with 80 (40-40). A 3-way tie for 3rd place occurred with Ethan Bond, Jon Wangard, and Mark Cortese shooting 83. CONGRATULATIONS to Drew Lopez for his promotion to D2 after his strong performance at the Keystone Tournaments!
DIVISION 4: The Sr. players over 50 years old mostly controlled D4 Sunday at The River Course! Mike Zapf from Windsor, CO won the division trophy and 1st Place prize money by shooting 86 (45-41) including a birdie on the back nine. The Denver Chapter Owner, Kirk Hulbert, played a very consistent round with only 2 double bogeys and 1 par for a 90 (44-46). This tied Kirk to 2nd Place with guest and future APT Denver member Mack Mitchell (43-47). Bilal Jordan travelled all the way from Nashua, New Hampshire to participate at high altitude and ended in 4th Place.
DIVISION 5: Chris Lancaster, an early member of the Denver APT Chapter, obtained his personal goal of improving his golf game and winning D5 with a 101 score (45-56). Chris’ win did not come easy however, as Saturday’s Keystone Ranch winner, Jami VonKaenel gave him a run for the money. Jami tried her best to be a back-to-back winner, but came up one shot short for a 2nd Place finish with a 102 (46-56). Ryan Shephard of Lakewood, CO shot 105 (50-55) and finished 3rd.
OPEN NET: Andrew Lopez won the Optional Cash Open Net Game with a 35-35 = 70 net score. JR Burroughs and Jon Wangard tied for 2nd Place in the Open Net game with a 75 net score. Zach Rodriguez placed next with a 76 net score.
SENIOR NET: Players 50 years of age and older played for the Sr. Net trophy and 1st Place prize money. Greg DeRoeck won the Sr. Net competition at The River Course with an even par 71 net. A 3-way tie with a net score of 75 was recorded by Kirk Hulbert, Mike Zapf, and Mark Cortese.
FOLDS OF HONOR 50/50 RAFFLE: Drew Lopez won the jackpot at The River Course at Keystone in the 50/50 raffle. Drew won $165 and a strong contribution of $165 goes to the APT National Charity Partner Folds of Honor.
