MILE HIGH DENVER CHAPTER OF THE AMATEUR PLAYERS TOUR
Divot Magazine Sponsored Wellshire Tournament Recap-May 17, 2025
A very mild temperature and clear blue beautiful skies greeted the Denver Chapter’s largest field of 72 players to Wellshire Golf Course in Denver, Colorado. Wellshire is a Donald Ross design, has hosted the US Public Links Tournaments as well as claiming fame that Ben Hogan played in a golf tournament there.
Wellshire has its own Hogan’s Alley and several times during the 3 hours of tee times, APT Players waited to tee off from #1, while groups of ~20 young children and parents paraded across the 1st fairway to play and obtain lessons at Hogan’s Alley.
The opening Denver tournament for the 2025 summer season was sponsored by Divot Magazine. The Magazine contributed over $4000 worth of prizes to the 72 participants. Divot Magazine provided 20 digital Green Saver memberships, 20 Green Saver booklets, and every participant was provided with digital membership into the magazine’s Brew Saver program.
DIVISION 1: An exceptionally large field of 16 players led the day at 10:00am for the 1st Place trophies and prize winnings. New APT Denver member Trevor Glen from Englewood, Colorado won Division 1 with a very solid 71 which was 1 over par. Joshuah Thomson from Westminster, Colorado was a close 2nd place winner and shot 73 (+3). Another new member to the APT Denver Chapter, Bryan Rusin from Denver, won 3rd place money with a 1 stroke advantage over Mike Rosaasen from Denver.
Individual accomplishments to be noted are: Trevor Glen had 5 birdies, Joe Moulton had 2 birdies in a row on #9 and #10 plus another birdie on #7, followed by Gavin Monjaras and Joshuah Thomson each made 2 birdies for the day. Rusin and Thomson led the Par total with 11 each followed by Dylan Mitchell from Aurora, Colorado with 9 pars.
DIVISION 2: In a field of several previous APT winners and new members, Division 2 ended up with a 3-way tie for 1st Place with Kevin Causey, Brandon Lister, and Hendrik Orlowski each shooting 79. With such a beautiful spring day, Wellshire Golf Couse was full and could not offer us a hole for a sudden-death playoff until 6:20 pm. Therefore, the scorecard playoff was used to determine the winner and Kevin Causey won the trophy and split the prize money with Lister and Orlowski.
DIVISION 3: This Division was loaded with 24 total players, so the prize pool was quite large. Division 3 also ended in a tie between Las Vegas Chapter Matthew Tokunaga and Andrew (Drew) Lopez of Northglenn, Colorado shooting very solid 78s. Both Tokunaga and Lopez are previous APT Division winners and like Division 2, a scorecard playoff determined the winner. Drew Lopez won the trophy and split the prize pool winners for 1st place with Tokunaga. Garret Ely from Denver was only 1 stroke off joining the tie for first. Mark Cortese from Loveland, Colorado also won money in the large field with a solid 80.
DIVISION 4: Former winner in the Denver Chapter, Jim O’Shea from Littleton, shot an exceptionally good 40 on the back nine to win this Division with a total 83. New member Art Martin from Lone Tree, Colorado shot a competitive D4 score of 87 to win 2nd place money.
DIVISION 5: Ryan Gentry, new Denver Chapter member from Windsor, Colorado, eked out a 1 shot victory over previous Denver Chapter winner Zach Berg from Parker, Colorado. Gentry’s 87 won the trophy and 1st place earnings by 1 stroke.
FOLDS OF HONOR 50/50 RAFFLE: A record pot of $400 was recorded for the Mile High Denver Chapter. Easy math here as Mike Foxhoven, Denver Chapter Charter Member, was the lucky winner of $200. A strong contribution of $200 goes to the APT National Charity Partner Folds of Honor.
OPEN NET: An exceptionally enormous number of participants played for Net Competition for players below 50 years of age. The winners were Drew Lopez (-3), Ryan Gentry (-1), Matthew Tokunaga and Jim O’Shea (E) and Trevor Glen (+3).
SENIOR NET: Players 50 years of age and older played for the Sr. Net trophy and 1st Place prize money. New member to the Denver Chapter of the APT, Mark Cortese from Loveland, Colorado won this Division with a Net 72 (+2), followed by a tie for 2nd Place with Scott Rowley from Eaton and Greg DeRoeck of Parker, Colorado with a net 74 (+4).
