Tournament Champions
Highly renowned Pinehurst Country Club welcomed 58 Amateur Players to the APT event on a beautiful afternoon for golf. Excitement was felt in the air as the field was anticipating getting to play a round at the country club. The speed and undulations of the Pinehurst greens once again proved to be the defense of the course. An excellent barbecue dinner followed the golf round as players enjoyed eating, conversing, networking and getting to know people from other Divisions. The awarding of the trophies and prizes was held in the Pinehurst dining room.
NOTABLES: The challenging greens still yielded numerous birdies to the field. Gavin Monjares had a birdie on 3 holes in a row for a fantastic birdie streak on 16, 17, and 18. The leaders in the field were Gavin Monjares, Jack Dempsey, and Mark Cortese with 3 birdies each. Hendrik Orlowski, Greg Otto, John Anderson, and Bryan Rusin were both able to score 2 birdies each. In addition, other players in D1-D4 were able to garner 18 additional birdies.
DIVISION 1: Division 1 ended in a tie between Gavin Monjares ((37-38) and recently promoted Greg Otto (40-35). Both players shot 5 over 75s. The two players headed to the 184-yard par three 12th hole to begin the playoff. Both players hit on the green to the back-center blue pin. Monjares was ~30’ away and Otto was closer at about 15-18’ away. Greg was able to 2-putt for a par and became the winner of D1 when Gavin’s 4’ putt barely slid by the hole to score bogey. Bryan Rusin and Jack Dempsey were 1 stroke off the pace with 76s.
DIVISION 2: Mark Cortese, recently promoted to Division 2 played very well and shot 77 (40-37) to win the trophy and 1st Place price money. Mark’s 3 birdies propelled him to a 4-stroke win over Mark Byers who was playing in his first APT Denver tournament and shot 81(43-38). Eric Drucker won 3rd place by shooting 84 (40-44).
DIVISION 3: Mile High Denver Chapter Charter Member Seth Gurss has worked hard to earn his 1st Place finish in D3. Gurss shot a consistent round of 39-42 = 81 to win the trophy and prize money. Jon Wangard and Ethan Bond were close behind by shooting scores of 83. John McDonald and Doug Coleman ended up in a tie with scoring 84s. Competition was very keen in Division 3 at Pinehurst Country Club.
DIVISION 4: Division 4 had great competition as well and came down to the final few holes to determine the winner. Golfweek’s Amateur Tour player and Denver Director, Doug Smith, came out the winner with a score of 85, followed by John Anderson who was 1 stroke shy of a tie with 86. D4 had a 3-way tie for 3rd Place with Steve Brown, Brandon Foster, and Trent McQueen with scores of 87. Great competition in D4 with numerous players in position to win the Player of the Year Award.
DIVISION 5: Charlie Koch earned the trophy and first place prize money by shooting 89 (46-43), a very respectable D5 score. Tad Sandoval shot 95 (46-49) to win 2nd Place while Raymond Lopez came in 3rd place with 101 (50-51).
OPEN NET: Visiting Amateur Players Tour player from Diamond Bar, California, Royce Jiang, won the Open Net trophy and winnings. Royce scored +2 (72 Net) and won by 1 stroke over Steve Brown and Jon Wangard both scoring +3 (73 Net). Competition was remarkably close with John Anderson, Mark Byers both shooting +4 (74 Net)
SENIOR NET: This optional cash game proved to have; Red hot, red numbers, and under par scores! D3 Senior Seth Gurss won the close competition with a 4 under par net score of 66! Gurss won 1st Place prize money and the trophy. Charlie Kock followed with a net 67 (-3) and Mark Cortese won 3rd Place with 68 Net (-2)
FOLDS OF HONOR 50/50 RAFFLE: Cody Canzone was the winner of the 50/50 Raffle winning $107 with a contribution of $108 going to Folds of Honor.

MURPHY CREEK: The City of Aurora welcomes the Mile High Denver Chapter of the Amateur Players Tour back for the 2025 summer season. Tee-times begin at Murphy Creek at noon August 10, and a full field is anticipated. Registration closes at midnight August 3rd. Register early to play.
RIVERDALE DUNES: The Pete Dye designed layout welcomes the APT Tour to the 2nd ELEVATED EVENT in the Denver schedule on August 20. This elevated event will provide DOUBLE PAYOUTS and DOUBLE POINTS. This tournament may change the standings in many divisional POY awards. Registration closes at midnight August 13.
