From eagles to a hole in one, Saturday’s Upstate Amateur Player Tour Tournament at Greer Golf Club featured plenty of excitement as a packed field of golfers battled for over $6,000 in VISA cards and side games cash. The tournament was one of the biggest so far this calendar year for the Upstate Amateur Players Tour, which travels the Upstate of South Carolina, along with portions of North Carolina and Georgia – offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of 10 different divisions. Saturday, golfers were treated to the Greer Golf Club which has been transformed over the past few years into a premier club in the Upstate. Two years ago, it was announced that over $2 million worth of renovations would take place on the course nestled in Greenville County. The City of Greer has since created a world-class golfing experience, as competitors enjoyed the overcast day of golf on the well-maintained course.

Here’s a breakdown of the results from Saturday’s tournament by division:

Division 1 – Greer, SC native Greg Moore felt right at home Saturday, carding an impressive round of two-under par 70 to win Division 1. Moore opened with three birdies on the front nine before he made eagle on the par-four 14th hole. Moore played the back nine in even par to secure the narrow victory. Chase Sturkie finished runner-up after a round of 71, falling just one shot short of a playoff with Moore. Sturkie’s round was highlighted by a pair of eagles, the first coming on the par-five ninth hole and another on the par-five 15th hole. Sturkie played the four par fives in five under par. Randy Hodges and Jethro Niemela finished tied for third place with rounds of 73. Hodges also made eagle on the par-five ninth hole as Niemela’s steady day included three birdies. David Thompson rounded out the top five in the division with a round of 76.

Senior Division 1 – Greg Moore’s victory in Senior Division 1 came with much less stress as his round of 70 led to a clean sweep of the weekend. Moore shot two under par on the front nine, using consecutive birdies on Nos. four and five. After a bogey on the par-four eighth hole, Moore bounced back with a birdie on the par-five ninth. Randy Hodges finished second with a round of 73. Hodges offset a pair of bogies on the front nine with an eagle on the par-five ninth hole. He added two more birdies on the back nine to secure his runner-up finish. Mike Hartin finished third with a round of 77, followed by Frank Mattson who fired a round of 87 to finish fourth.

Division 2 – Carlos Santana outlasted a crowded group of challengers as his round of 74 was enough to claim the top spot in Division 2. Santana made three front nine birdies to quickly climb the leaderboard. On the back nine, Santana overcame a double bogey with a birdie on the par-five 15th hole to secure the victory. A.J. Lee, Logan Pendergrass, Chris Kemp, and Chris Lombardozzi were all in hot pursuit, finishing in a tie for second place with rounds of 77. Lee carded a front nine score of 37, just one over par, as he opened with two birdies in his first six holes. Pendergrass made eagle on the par-four second hole to settle into his round before he closed the round in style with a birdie on the par-four 18th hole. Kemp made 11 pars during his round and also made birdie on the par-four second hole as his steady day landed him a second-place finish. Lombardozzi finished with the second most birdies in the division (3). After making two birdies on the front nine, the Inman, SC native played the back nine in even par with a birdie on No. 12 and a string of six straight pars.

Senior Division 2 – John Masters and Joe Tucker found themselves locked in a tight battle on the back nine, however, in the end, it was Masters who emerged victorious with a round of 79. Masters’ made his second and final birdie of the day on the par-four 14th hole, proving to be the difference in his one stroke victory. Tucker finished runner-up, just one shot back, posting a round of 80. Tucker managed to make six pars on the back nine as he kept pace with Masters. Brad Anderson shot 87 to finish third as his rough was highlighted by a birdie on the par-five 12th hole. Andy Stevenson rounded out the division with a score of 89 to finish fourth.

Division 3 – Five golfers finished within four shots of the winner in Division 3 Saturday as Michael Shirley claimed the top honors with a round of 79. Shirley’s steady day opened with a birdie on the par-three fourth hole before a triple bogey led to a round of three over on the front. Shirley made another birdie on the par-three 13th hole to settle back in, making three pars in his final five holes. Jeff Pauley and Dan Eastep were clos behind in second place, tied after both players posted rounds of 80. Pauley played his final three holes in one under par as he attempted to climb the leaderboard. Eastep made seven pars, a birdie, and a double bogey on the back nine to finish runner-up. Darrius Prysock and Myron Samuels rounded out the top five in the division in a tie for fourth place with rounds of 81. Prysock made three birdies on the day, including back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th holes. Samuels’ highlight of the round came on the par-five 12th hole where he made birdie.

Senior Division 3 – Eighteen holes of golf were not enough to decide a winner in Senior Division 3 as it was Dan Eastep who prevailed in a playoff to claim the top honors. Both Eastep and runner-up Jeff Pauley carded rounds of 80 to reach the playoff. After a shaky start on the front nine, Eastep found his groove on the back nine, playing Nos. 10-16 in one under par with six pars. Pauley made a back nine charge, playing his final six holes in one over par, including a birdie on the par-four 16th hole. Myron Samuels finished third with a score of 81, followed by John Benton in fourth place after carding an 85. Benton took advantage of the par-five 12th hole to make birdie, leading to his top five finish. Lyle Gumer shot 86 to finish fifth as his round featured a birdie on the par-four third hole.

Division 4 – Believe it or not, Robert Gibson’s win in Division 4 was not the highlight of his day. The Fletcher, NC native recorded an impressive hole-in-one on the par-three 13th hole, helping him to a round of 80 and victory in Division 4 Saturday. With Robert being a member of the Bushnell Hole In One Club, he will receive $500, a Bushnell Range Finder or Speaker and a Plaque to display his achievement. Gibson made birdie on the 12th hole before his hole-in-one, paving the way for his victory. Frederick Valazquez finished second in the division with a round of 83. Senior Division 4 – Robert Gibson made it a clean sweep Saturday, also earning the top honors in Senior Division 4 with a round of 80. Gibson’s back-nine hole in one led to a round of 39, three over par on the inward stretch. William Beck finished four shots back in second place with a round of 84. Beck tightened his game on the back nine, playing the first five holes in just one over par before making birdie on the par-three 17th hole. Russel Loyd, Sr. posted a round of 85 to finish third, followed by David Croston in fourth place with a round of 88. Senior Division 5 – Despite falling short in Division 5, Danny Sullivan’s round of 96 was enough to win Senior Division 5 Saturday. Sullivan’s round was highlighted by consecutive pars on the 16th and 17th holes, paving the way for his victory. Bill Turner made the lone birdie of the division en route to a round of 98 and a second-place finish. Turner took advantage of the par-four 14th hole, making birdie. Gene Mason shot 102 to finish third, followed by Jimmy Gillespie in fourth and Dick Jenkins in fifth with rounds of 105 and 106, respectively.
