The Houston Amateur Players Tour made its first trip to April Sound, and despite receiving 4.5 inches of rain just three days prior, the course held up remarkably well with only one hole designated cart path only. Though April Sound is one of the shorter courses on the schedule, its narrow fairways and challenging, undulating greens proved to be a true test for all divisions.
D1: Jared Marusic jumped out to an early lead with a front-nine score of 37 (+2), holding a three-shot advantage over Stephen Bransburg Jr, Jason Hawthorn, and Nick Catalano, who each carded a 40 (+5). Birdies on hole 12 by Jared and first-time guest Nick Catalano made things interesting, but a double bogey on 13 by Jared allowed Nick to pull even with five holes to play. Stephen’s birdie on 16 brought him within one, but Jared held strong down the stretch to secure the win with a 78 (+7). Stephen Bransburg III finished runner-up with a 79 (+8).
D2: A tight battle unfolded between James Michalsky and Stephen Bransburg Jr, with James carding a 38 (+3) on the front and Stephen just behind at 39 (+4). Tied after 13 holes, James made a costly double on 17 but bounced back with a birdie on 18 to force a playoff, both players finishing at 81 (+10). After finishing the first playoff hole with pars, Stephen sealed the win with an impressive chip-in on the second hole.
D3: Ellis Flores took control early with a steady front-nine 39 (+4), giving him a two-shot lead over Joseph Sawyer. Flores continued his consistent play on the back nine, finishing with an 81 (+10) to take the title by six shots.
D4: Brad Roberts posted the only birdie on the front nine, carding a 44 (+9) and building a two-shot lead over Martin Scarpati. Key pars on holes 10, 11, and 14 helped Roberts maintain his lead and ultimately secure the win with a round of 91 (+20).
D5: Raj Jonnalagadda made an early statement with a par on hole 1 and a birdie on hole 5, shooting a 44 (+9) and taking a three-shot lead into the back nine over Ricardo Ramirez. Ricardo’s par on 16 gave him a one-shot edge heading into the final two holes, but Raj’s bogey on 18 was just enough to clinch his first tournament win with a 97 (+26).
Sr Net: Ellis Flores continued his strong play, capturing the Senior Net title with a 68 (-3), while Charles Ackerman finished second with a 74.
Next up is the beautiful Bay Oaks Country Club in Clear Lake on June 16th, which is our second private club this year. This will also be our second elevated event, so if you are in the Player of the Year race, this will be an important event to come earn double points.
