Tournament Champions
Houston APT paid a visit to The Wilderness Golf Club in Lake Jackson. The Wilderness took a hard hit last year from Hurricane Beryl and is still in recovery mode with some reconstruction still present on the golf course. Although “cart path only” was decided to continue to allow the fairways to recover a few more weeks, the morning temps and clear skies made it an enjoyable day for golf, and it did not disappoint.
D1: Jared Marusic, coming off a victory at Windrose, shot a smooth even par front nine (36) to take a one-shot lead over Austin Duhon 37(+1). Jared sent a message that he was still in win mode with back-to-back birdies on 11 & 12. Firing on all cylinders, Jared put a finishing touch to his round by adding two more birdies on 14 & 17 to shoot 68(-4) and take his second win in a row. Newcomer Bryan Clevenger took second with a 75(+3)
D2: Daren Pickering got an early birdie on #2 to lead him to an even par front nine (36) followed closely by James Michalsky ‘s 37(+1). Daren pulled away on the back nine with his steady play. Apart from a little bobble on 18, he had an excellent round of 74(+2) to take the commanding win by 5 strokes.
D3: The story of the day belongs to Gary Jacobson, who had a career day at The Wilderness Golf Club. With two birdies and two bogeys on the front, he made the turn at even par (36). A bogey on 12 followed by a birdie on 13 kept him at even par and the dream alive!
A hole out on 15 from 100 plus yards catapulted him to -2 with three holes left to play. Gary took a bogey on 16 and 18 to shoot even par (72) and won by 11 strokes. What a dominating performance!
D4: The showdown battle was heavy with this group. On the front nine, Martin Scarpati and Allen Thompson were tied at 43(+7) followed closely by Ray Medina and John Sparks shooting 44(+8). Carolina Ackerman was still in the mix at 45(+9) Ray Medina’s consistent play on the back got him in the club house posting an 85(+13). Watching the scoreboard from the clubhouse, Medina’s 85 was enough to bring home the trophy and his first win since returning from injury. Welcome back Ray… it is good to see you back and playing well on the Tour! John Sparks took second shooting 88(+16).
D5: Robert Beck and friend Rick Pritchard came out battling in the first nine holes. Robert, at 45(+9), took a two-shot lead to the back nine over Rick at 47(+11) and Jacob Szilagy, who was at 49(+13) trailing close behind. Robert’s determination and grit showed as he played the back nine better than the front by shooting 88(+16) and securing the victory. Ricardo Rameriz took second at 98(+26).
Senior Net: Gary Jacobson took Senior Net overwhelmingly with a record low 60(-12). Daren Pickering took second with -6(66).
Congratulations once again to all the winners! Next up is Grand Lake in Montgomery, Texas on April 26th. This is a first for the Houston APT Tour and we look forward to another great outing.
