Tournament Champions
The Upstate Amateur Players Tour fielded the largest group of competitors during the young 2025 season as more than $4,000 were up for grabs in cash and VISA gift card prizes at the Links O’ Tryon Golf Club.
Golfers were treated to an unseasonably warm day for golf on Saturday, as the mid-November temperatures approached 70 degrees by the afternoon. Nestled at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains in beautiful Campobello, SC, the Links O’ Tryon offers a unique experience for golfers.
Competitors encountered a picturesque setting at the Links O’ Tryon. Selected as one of the Best Places to Play by Golfweek magazine and rated four stars by Golf Digest, the course is challenging yet enjoyable for players of all skill levels. The new Diamond Zoysia greens along with revamped bunkers ensure a top-level golf experience for each round.
The Upstate Amateur Players Tour travels the Upstate of South Carolina and portions of North Carolina, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to play in one of ten different divisions. The tour provides a one-of-a-kind experience for competitors as the tour is designed by the players, for the players.
Here’s a breakdown of the results from Saturday’s tournament by division:
Division 1 – Greg Moore used three back nine birdies en route to shooting 76 and winning Division 1 on Saturday. Moore made birdies on the par-four 11th and 16th holes, along with the par-five 14th hole. Tj Hines was close behind in second place, carding a round of 78. Hines steady round included five pars and a birdie on the back nine as the attempted to make a run at the top of the leaderboard. Jimmy Popp finished third with a round of 79, followed by Norm Russell in fourth place after posting an 82. Butch Longcoy rounded out the division with a score of 84.
Senior Division 1 – Greg Moore made it a clean sweep as his round of 76 was also enough to claim the top spot in Senior Division 1. Moore shot 40 on the front nine before finding his groove on the closing stretch, playing his final nine holes in even par. Jimmy Popp finished second with a round of 79. Popp finished his round out in style with a birdie on the par-five closing hole. Norm Russell rounded out the division with a round of 82. Russell’s highlight of the round came on the par-five closing hole as he made birdie.
Division 2 – Logan Pendergrass managed to keep his card clean on the back nine to shoot 76 and win Division 2 on Saturday. Pendergrass made six pars and three birdies on his final nine holes to win by two shots. Pendergrass made birdie on the par-four 13th hole, along with the two back-nine par fives in Nos. 14 and 18. Carlos Santana and Chris Lombardozzi were close behind in second place, tied with rounds of 78. Santana birdied the par-four 13th hole to climb the leaderboard before a string of three straight bogeys. Lombardozzi also birdied the back-nine par fives in his comeback effort. Joe Tucker finished fourth with a round of 80, followed by Matthew Hendon and Bob Grove, who tied for fifth place with rounds of 83.
Senior Division 2 – Joe Tucker played a five-hole stretch on the back nine in three under par, paving the way to his round of 80 to win Senior Division 2. Tucker made consecutive birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 before making another birdie on the par-three 15th hole. Matthew Hendon and Bob Grove were close behind in second place with rounds of 83. Hendon also birdies the 11th and 12th holes as Grove’s two back nine birdies came on Nos. 13 and 16. Andy Stevenson rounded out the top five in the with a round of 90 in fourth place.
Division 3 – Travis Blackwell and Chad Aiken found themselves locked in a tight battle down the stretch, as when the dust settled, Blackwell emerged victorious with a round of 79. Blackwell made two birdies on the back nine to solidify his position atop the leaderboard. Aiken carded a round of 80 to finish runner-up. Aiken birdied the par-four 11th hole before a few bogeys down the stretch dropped him to second place. A crowded field tied for third place as Mark Lytle, Dan Eastep, and Cody Markovich all posted rounds of 85, rounding out the top five. Both Eastep and Markovich recorded a pair of birdies as Eastep made a pair of birdies on the 15th and 16th holes as Markovich picked up his two birdies on the front nine.
Senior Division 3 – Travis Blackwell swept the weekend as his round of 79 was also enough to claim the top spot in Senior Division 3 on Saturday. Blackwell’s steady round included eight pars and three birdies. Chad Aiken finished second, just one shot behind Blackwell with a score of 80. Aiken carded a round of 40 on the front nine, highlighted by a birdie on the par-three fourth hole. Mark Lytle and Dan Eastep tied for third place with rounds of 85. Mark Stroupe rounded out the top-five in the division with a score of 89.
Division 4 – Billy Trull’s three-hole stretch on the back nine proved to be the difference as the Anderson, SC native shot 85 to win Division 4. Trull made birdie on the par-five 14th hole before two more pars to steady his back nine. Steve Daniels finished runner-up with a round of 87. Daniels made seven pars on the day, including four during a five-hole stretch on the back nine. Tom Hannah and Peter Fahey tied for third place with rounds of 88. Robert Gibson rounded out the top-five with a score of 89.
Senior Division 4 – Billy Trull made it a clean sweep of the weekend as his round of 85 earned him the top honors in Senior Division 4 as well. Trull played his front nine in 40, highlighted by a birdie on the par-five eighth hole. The birdie was accompanied by five pars on the front nine. Steve Daniels finished in second place after posting a round of 87. Daniels parred the 10th, 11th, 14th, and 15th to steady his round on the back nine. Tom Hannah made three consecutive pars on the back nine en route to a round of 88 as he tied with Peter Fahey for third place. Fahey birdied the par-four 11th hole before three pars in a row on the inward stretch. Robert Gibson rounded out the top-five as his round of 89 was highlighted by a pair of birdies on the par-four 11th and 16th holes.
Division 5 – Six competitors finished within five shots of the leader on Saturday in Division 5 as when the dust settled, it was Gene Mason who prevailed with a round of 93. Mason made par on the par-three 15th hole, which proved to be the difference in his one shot victory over his challengers. Bill Turner was in hot pursuit, finishing second with a round of 94. Turner made three pars on the front nine to shoot 45, placing himself in contention with just nine holes to play. Eric Barnes finished third with a round of 95, followed by a tie for fourth place involving K Bruce Reeves and Marty Brock with rounds of 86. Reeve’s round featured a birdie on the par-four 16th hole.
Senior Division 5 – The same battle that played out in Division 5 took center stage in Senior Division 5 as well as Gene Mason managed to secure the sweep of the weekend with a round of 93. Mason was down by one shot to second-place finisher Bill Turner going to the back nine. Mason erased the deficit and managed to win by one as Turner finished second with a score of 94. Marty Brock finished third with a round of 96, followed by Vern Verna in fourth place after carding a 97. Danny Sullivan and Tim Kunkel rounded out the top-five in the division with rounds of 99.
