Minneapolis APT Battles the Heat at The Ridges at Sand Creek
JORDAN, MN — With the heat index reaching a blistering 103° and zero wind, conditions at The Ridges at Sand Creek proved to be some of the most grueling of the 2025 season. But even as the sun scorched the fairways, the course stood tall in pristine condition — a true test of mental and physical endurance for all players in the field.
Division 1 – Matthiowetz Edges Stepan in Nail-Biter
In Division 1, Brett Matthiowetz (+3, 75) of New Ulm captured the win in impressive fashion. It was a tight battle with Leo Stepan (+4, 76) down the stretch. Stepan pulled even on the 14th with a thrilling eagle on the par-4, setting up an intense final four holes. But Matthiowetz kept his composure and held on, with Stepan narrowly missing a putt on 18 that would have forced a playoff.
Division 2 – Dalton Stays Steady in the Heat
Mike Dalton (+11, 83) of Chaska took top honors in Division 2, playing a consistent round from start to finish. While Jackson Erdmann (+24, 96) showed flashes in his first event of the year, struggles with the driver left him fighting uphill for much of the day. Dalton capitalized with steady play and minimized big mistakes to secure the win.
Division 3 – Van Spankeren Battles the Flatstick
Michael Van Spankeren (+15, 87) stood alone atop the Division 3 leaderboard. While the field may have been quiet, Van Spankeren’s round was anything but. He found fairways and greens consistently but couldn’t get the putter to cooperate. Despite that, he stayed mentally sharp and grinded his way to the finish, carding 45 on the front and 42 on the back.
Division 4 – Welcome to the Tour, Hentges!
Luke Hentges (+24, 96) made the most of his Amateur Players Tour debut, capturing the Division 4 title and officially joining the Minneapolis chapter. Hentges battled through the heat and a challenging back nine, posting a solid opening round to earn his first win — and a spot on the leaderboard moving forward.
Division 5 – Bakke Joins in Style
Nicholas Bakke (+35, 107) also made his APT debut, grinding through The Ridges’ punishing layout to pick up a win in Division 5. The course threw everything at him, but Bakke stayed the course and earned his victory — becoming the chapter’s newest member.
