Central Jersey Championship at Tamarack (East) Golf Course RECAP
Tamarack East Battles Rain and Competition
The New Jersey Amateur Players Tour hosted its second event of June at Tamarack Golf Course – East Course in East Brunswick, welcoming a strong field of 54 players. Known for its tight fairways, well-guarded greens, and mature tree-lined layout, Tamarack East is a classic test of golf that rewards accuracy and course management.
With rain in the forecast, we knew the day would be a grind — and the weather didn’t disappoint. A steady drizzle kicked off the round, eventually turning into heavier rainfall that led to some pooling on the greens and added another layer of difficulty to an already challenging course.
Despite the tough conditions, the spirit of competition never wavered. Players remained determined, navigating the wet fairways and slick greens with positive attitudes and unwavering focus. Thanks to the resilience of both the players and the course, we were able to complete the event successfully.
A big thank you to everyone who stuck it out and showed what APT golf is all about — grit, community, and the love of the game.
In Division 1, There were no Division 1 participants at this event.
In Division 2, Fight to the Finish at Tamarack East
With a small but competitive field of just 7 players, the stage was set for a tight battle to the finish. At the turn, the leaderboard was locked in a dead heat—Peter Iosso and John Willadsen both posted solid front-nine scores of +1 (37). Just three strokes behind and staying within striking distance were Colleen Rafter and Freddie Ramos Jr., each carding +4 (40).
As the rain intensified and the course conditions grew tougher on the back nine, the pressure mounted. Navigating the challenges with poise, it was Peter Iosso who separated himself from the pack, closing strong with a final round of +4 (75) to take home the victory. John Willadsen finished just five shots back with a respectable securing second place. +9 (80),
It was a gritty performance by all, and a testament to perseverance in the face of tough weather and a challenging golf course.
In Division 3, Greener Claims Second Win in Gritty Weather Showdown
With a 15-player field, the competition was wide open heading into the turn, and with the weather worsening by the minute, the final outcome would come down to who could grind it out through the wet and demanding conditions.
Gary Greener and Nicholas Lazarchuck led the way at the halfway mark, both sitting at +5 (41). Just one shot back were Kelly Hopkins and Brian Fazio at +6 (42), followed closely by Andrew Michael and Jerry D’Ascoli at +7 (43). Still very much in the mix were Stevie Stevenson and Timothy Dublynn, both turning in +8 (44).
As the rain intensified and the course became more punishing, the leaderboard began to shift. Greener rose to the occasion, navigating the back nine with determination and composure to secure his second win in just three starts, posting a final score of +11 (82). Lazarchuck and Hopkins pushed hard to keep the pressure on, but ultimately settled for a tie for second at +13 (84).
Another hard-fought battle under challenging conditions—congrats to all who toughed it out!
In Division 4, Chambers Clinches Division 4 Title in Sudden-Death Playoff
With a field of 18 players and steady rain in the forecast, conditions were anything but predictable. As the round unfolded, it quickly became clear that success would depend on who could best adapt to the wet, demanding layout.
At the turn, it was La Fountain who led the charge with a strong +3 (39). Chasing him were Sal Leto and Keno Chambers, both at +6 (42), followed closely by Michael DeVito at +7 (43), and Anthony Romano and Mel Portalatin at +8 (44)—all well within striking distance.
But the back nine told a different story. Leto and Chambers turned up the pressure, each firing a solid +4 (39) to finish tied at +11 (81), forcing a sudden-death playoff to determine the Division 4 champion.
The playoff was decided quickly—on the very first hole. Chambers secured the win with a clutch par, while Leto settled for bogey, earning a well-fought runner-up finish.
La Fountain and Romano rounded out the podium, tying for third with final scores of +16 (87).
A thrilling finish in tough conditions—congratulations to Keno Chambers on an impressive playoff victory!
In Division 5, Romano Holds Steady to Capture Division 5 Win
With a smaller field of 9 players, this group faced the worst of the weather early on, enduring steady rain through the front nine. Fortunately, the skies began to clear on the back, giving players a chance to salvage some solid scores. But the damage had been done early—and it was the front nine that would ultimately shape the leaderboard.
Frank Romano handled the early challenge best, turning at +7 (43). He was followed closely by Paul Taylor at +9 (45), with Rodney Johnson I not far behind at +12 (48).
Despite the improving conditions, Romano held his ground through the back nine, finishing with a final score of +21 (92) to secure the win. Taylor had a chance to take the title with a par or better on the 18th, but a costly triple bogey handed the victory to Romano.
In the end, Taylor and Johnson would share second place honors, both carding +25 (96).
A gritty performance by all in true APT fashion—congrats to Frank Romano on a well-earned win!
