2025 Robert Trent Jones Golf Course Tournament Results
Tournament Champions
The Upstate and Charleston Amateur Players tours combined this past weekend for the biggest tournament of the year on Hilton Head Island as the Original Icebreaker tournament returned once again. The annual tournament is held early in the season, serving as a kickoff to the start of a busy tournament schedule for both tours. The 36-hole tournament featured 110 competitors as more than $12,500 in cash and VISA gift card prizes were up for grabs. The fun-filled weekend of golf started Saturday at the Robert Trent Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes Resort as tournament play concluded on Sunday. The competitors experienced ideal golfing weather, taking advantage of the scenic course settled near the water’s edge. Opened in 1967, the Robert Trent Jones Course has only gotten better over time. Following an extensive renovation by Jones’ protégé, Roger Rulewich, the oldest course at Palmetto Dunes Resort was named South Carolina’s “Golf Course of the Year” in 2003. Last year, the Robert Trent Jones Course was named to the “2024 Best Courses You Can Play in SC” list compiled by Golfweek. Golfers not only look forward to wide fairways, expansive greens and subtle elevation changes but also a new lake and bunkers that have been reshaped and restored to Jones’ original design. Other notable features include the par-five 10th hole, one of the only two oceanfront holes on all of Hilton Head Island. Staff at the club worked seamlessly with tournament officials to make the Original Icebreaker tournament the best of the season.

Senior Division 1 – Thirty-six holes of golf proved to not be enough to determine a winner in Senior Division 1 as Stuart Smith and Frank Mattson found themselves tied with 160 strokes for the weekend. Once the playoff was settled, it was Smith who emerged victorious in the division. Mattson held a two-shot lead entering the final round, after the Charlotte, NC native managed to post a 76 to open the tournament Saturday. Mattson played his back nine Saturday in just one over par, highlighted by birdies on the 12th and 15th holes. Charles Hartley and Darryl Phelps rounded out the top five in the division with a scoring total of 168 for the two-day tournament. Hartley led the division with four birdies on the weekend, three of which came during the final round on Sunday.
