Tour Stop #3 at Silver Rock
Results and Recap
Tour stop #3 was a beautiful day at Silver Rock Golf Course in La Quinta, CA former home to the American Express Championships on the PGA Tour. Course was in good shape, with the greens rolling fast and smooth. It was great to have so many new players and those joining us from Washington and Arizona, and almost all new winners on the tour! Two divisions went to a playoff, and both net contests to a card off, so here is the breakdown.
Division 1: We had a smaller field of division 1 golfers at this one, but they played well. Now new member Berkecem Renda (Westminster, CA) was at this third event and ready to take the trophy. Ethan Leveque (La Quinta, CA) was joining us as a guest and 2024 Division 2 player of the year Angel Sotelo (Downey, CA) was ready to start his season in Division 1, after a 10 week layoff with an MCL Sprain. Angel started off strong with a birdie on #1, followed up with 2 more birdies on #7 and #8 to make the turn at -2. Berkecem had to take a triple bogey on the front nine that set him back and Ethan took 3 bogeys on the front nine to give Angel and comfortable lead heading to the back nine. All three players ended up with a couple birdies on the back nine mixed in with a few bogeys and that meant that Angel Sotelo won his first division 1 tournament with a -2 70 and the trophy.
Division 2: We had a good field of 10 players in division 2 with some brand-new members and guests playing, along with Arizona Player of the year Curt Bressner (Buckeye, AZ) joining us. Former member and playing as a guest today was Aaron Alvarado (Montebello, CA) and Tommy Sutera (San Bernadino, CA) New member along with Curt Bressner all shot 40 on the front nine and it was going to be tight on the back nine. Unfortunately for Tommy he ended with double bogey on both 17 and 18 to ruin his chances of winning but ended up third with an 83. Curt took a 7 on par 3 16, but was able to birdie 18 to shoot an 82, which left Aaron still on the course needing a par on 18 to force a playoff and he did! In the playoff Curt scrambled to save par on #1 to match Aaron and the par 5 #2 was next, both players positioned themselves well, but both hit approach shots long into the back bunker. Curt’s bunker shot went long and with these greens it was no easy two putt and he ended up missing his bogey putt to make a 7. Aaron had a 2 ft putt for the win with a bogey which he made. Great effort guys and congratulations to Aaron Alvarado on winning his 2025 membership!
Division 3: We had a huge field of 17 division 3 players. New members, guests from Washington and the local area along with regular members battling it out. Tour veteran Scott Chalayan Cessna (Anaheim, CA) was ready to kick off his 2025 season and he played well. However, this leaderboard did not have some of the familiar names at the top as some of them struggled with the challenge of this course. It was new member Kevin Keene (Lake Forest, CA), David Raffety (Fallbrook, CA) and Daniel Payne (Yucaipa, CA) who played well at this one. Daniel made 2 birdies on his front nine on his way to a 38 and a commanding lead! David struggled on the front with a 44 but rallied on the back with a 38 to put himself into contention. New Member Kevin Keene also struggle to a 46 front nine but also rallied with a 38 on the back. However, Daniel Payne continued his strong play and shot a better score than division 2 players with a great round of 78! This was Daniel’s first win on our tour, David also finished second and his best result, and Kevin in his first event took 3rd, Scott 4th.
Division 4: Russell Eustice (Ft Irwin, CA) was ready to try and take the trophy again as the national points leader in division 4. However back in the field and battling to take the win were Thomas Meagher (Palm Desert, CA) Marty Rinehart (Upland, CA) female golfer Baska Tugsgerel (Irvine, CA) and a large division 4 field again. Marty was up to his strong play again taking the lead and holding it until he hit a wall with four holes to play. It was a tight one coming down the last few holes between all the players in contention. Baska finished strong with a par on 18, and Thomas took a bogey making it tight. However, Saul Armendariz (Glendale, CA) closed with par on 17 and 18 to tie Thomas for the lead and forcing a playoff! Baska finished one shot back for 3rd place. Saul and Thomas went to the first playoff hole and Saul was able to secure his first win on tour!
Division 5: Our normal group of division 5 players were not in the field this event, except for tour veteran Dennis Mc Zeal (Fontana, CA). Trenton Hansen (Murrieta, CA) now a division 5 player after his move down and guest Jeffrey Ransom (La Quinta, CA) were battling it out. Jeffrey was playing strong and held a substantial lead going into the back nine. However Trenton and Dennis started to make a move on the back as Jeffrey was starting to struggle. Jeffrey was able to hang on with his 99 score to take the win! Trenton finished second.
Senior Net contest: Because of their strong play in division 4 Saul Armendariz (Glendale, CA) Thomas Meagher (Palm Desert, CA) both tied also in the senior net contest with 75, however Thomas had the better back nine in a card off and he took the trophy in senior net. Points and Prize money were split between the two players. Tim Rohrer (San Diego, CA) took third place points and money.
Open Net Contest: Open Net also went to a tie breaker card off with Baska Tugsgerel (Irvine, CA) and Scott Chalayan Cessna (Anaheim, CA). Baska had a net back nine of 37 and Scott 40, therefore Baska took the trophy and they both split points and prize money.
