Tournament Champions
Tour Stop #10 of the season The Ventura Open at Olivas Links Golf Club in Ventura, CA. Other than a bit windy it was a great day on the course. This was the best pace at this course we have experienced in the last few years and a good bunch of players. let’s get to the action….
Division 1: Some of the local Division 1 players made it out to this one, Cole Lum (Moorpark, CA,) Kyle Moss (Sylmar, CA) and then those who made the drive, Jason Wall (Murrieta, CA) and our season points leader, Angel Sotelo, (Downey, CA). The front nine saw Jason shoot a 2 under 34 with 2 birdies on the front nine and in great position. However New member to the tour Kelly Pimenov II (Vista, CA) Sank it for Eagle from the fairway to shoot an even 36. On the back nine Jason continued his strong play and sealed the win on 18 when he chipped in for Eagle and a round of -3 69! Cole continued to play strong finishing second at 73 with Angel Sotelo finishing third at 75! Some great golf by our D1 players. Unfortunately Kyle hurt his wrist on the back nine and had to withdraw.
Division 2: Thomas Crowder (Glendale, CA) Vinny O’Brien (Sun Valley, CA) and Phil Caccamise (Laguna Hills, CA) were back in the field for division 2 along with new member Mark Freie (Camarillo, CA) and another good field of div 2 players. After the front nine it was a tight battle with Vinnie and Mark both shooting 38. Phil made a great eagle on 18 to finish at 79 and in the clubhouse. Vinnie also birdied 18 but took a triple on the par 5 14th that put him at 81. However local player Mark Freie continued to play strong and finished with a back nine 36 and a 74 score that earned him the win!
Division 3: New Member Jayson Huett (Los Alamitos, CA) Timothy Bias (La Verne, CA) and Brian Czerniak (Woodland Hills, CA) along with tour veteran Ryan Encinas (Oceanside, CA) were all in a battle and this one would go to a playoff! Jason was in the clubhouse at 83 and thinking he might get into the playoff as Timothy and Brian both bogeyed the par 5 18th. Ryan made par and finished 4th with an 85. Brian and Timothy with bogey on 18 both shot 82 and forced a playoff. Jason first time on tour almost took the win but missed by one shot. Timothy and Brian went to a playoff and after one hole Timothy was the Division 3 champion! Good playing guys.
Division 4: Our largest field of the day continued to be division 4. Aaron Bryon (Oceanside, CA) Kurt Odegard (Anaheim Hills, CA) John Moyle (Vancouver WA) and now division 4 player after his win at Steele Canyon Kiran Raina (Altadena, CA) were all playing well. Kiran was on fire on the front nine with a birdie on #9 he shot a one over 37! Aaron was hanging tough not far behind with a 41. Kurt was at 42 and John was also at 41. This was Kiran’s tournament if he could stay on fire, he could go back to back wins in 2 different divisions! However he hit a rough patch and went double bogey, double bogey, triple bogey on the back nine to bring all the others back into the mix! Aaron was being consistent and putting some pressure on Kiran, however 18 was the difference maker as Aaron made par, Kurt made double bogey, and Kiran made birdie! Kiran wins the Ventura Open, Aaron second, and Kurt third!
Division 5: One of our smaller fields of the season in D5 as Tommy Weatherby and Kiran Raina both were promoted. However past champion Royce Jiang (Diamond Bar, CA) along with 2022 Player of the year Dennis McZeal (Fontana, CA) and Eddy Moore (Menifee, CA) were ready to battle. Dennis and Eddy were tied after 10 holes and Royce was scrambling to get into contention. Again it all came down to hole 18, Eddy made double bogey, and Dennis made bogey to win by one shot 98 to a 99! Congrats to Dennis at age 75 and still winning tournaments!
