Tournament Champions
Tour Stop #10 of the season was held at Steele Canyon Golf club in Jamul, CA just east of San Diego. We had our largest turn out for any one-day event this season on tour with 82 golfers! Golfers from New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, and all other places around the US were in town for the major at Torrey Pines and played at Steele Canyon with us as a warm up event. The course was in great condition and weather was ok. So let’s get to the action….
Division 1: We had a great field of 12 division 1 golfers with Leonardo Giron (Chula Vista, CA) in his backyard. National Player of the Year contender Josh Crossen (Las Vegas, NV) Nick Chavarin (Chula Vista, CA) was joining us as a guest. Also, the National APT Co-owner Matt Minder (Mechanicsburg, MO) was in the field. Juan Martinez (Perris, CA) was off to a great start with 3 pars but then a double bogey on the par 5 with a difficult pin placement. Nick Chavarin had 2 bogeys and a birdie to go out in 36 and in contention. Josh found himself struggling as he had 3 double bogeys and no birdies on his round which isn’t normal for him. Leonardo however had 2 birdies on the front nine to shoot a 33 and kept pace on the back with only 2 bogeys to shoot even par 71 and the win! Nick came in second with 76 and Juan was third with 80 on a tough course. Congrats guys and congrats on winning a membership to our tour Nick!!!
Division 2: We had a strong showing from our Utah division 2 golfers at Steele Canyon. Jeff Clifford (Eagle Mountain, Utah) TJ Johanson (Riverdale, UT) and Tyler Moore (Spanish Fork, UT) all were playing well and in contention. Paul Hess (Lincoln University, PA) took an 8 on the par 4 11th but then came back with birdie, birdie, eagle! Meanwhile Jeff Clifford birdied 18 to be in the clubhouse with a 78 and waiting to see if it would hold. Tyler Moore made a couple birdies on the back but then finished double, bogey, bogey to take him out of contention. TJ was making a charge and needed a strong finish to possibly win it and did he ever with an Eagle chip in on 18 to put him into a tie with Jeff at 78, wow! Jeff and TJ ended up settling the playoff on the 1st hole as TJ made 5 and Jeff hit it in the water to take a 7 and TJ Johanson was our D2 champion!
Division 3: Division 2 was dominated by Utah players but Division 3 saw a strong showing from the Southern California guys. 4 of the top 6 were SoCal players and of our largest field of the day with 27 golfers in D3! David Raffety (Fallbrook, CA) hadn’t played in a few months with us and has been dealing with some health issues, but he played well enough to finish 6th out of 27, way to go David. Blake Moorman (Fallbrook, CA) has been staying in the hunt in most tournaments and again today shot an 86 on a tough course to come in third place. Gary Barrow (Richmond, KY) played a great round, and it looked like he was going to be the champion until the 18th hole where he took a double bogey and it dropped him to 2nd with an 85. Sitting in the clubhouse for an hour not thinking he was going to win was Tim Rohrer (San Diego, CA). He was almost in disbelief as the scores kept dropping and then he was the champion for the first time on our tour with an 84!! Way to go Tim!
Division 4: Utah, SoCal, and New Jersey were battling it out in our division 4 field. Mel Portalatin (Union, NJ) Steven Sylvester (Midvale, UT) Brad Forsyth (Alta Loma, CA) and Russel Eustice (Ft Irwin, CA) were in a tight contest. It all came down to the last few holes as Mel had a stretch of double bogeys on the back putting him at 91 and 4th place. Brad finished bogey, bogey, bogey to finish at 90 and locked up third place. So it was down to Russell and Steven and Steven went bogey, bogey, and Par on 18 to win over Russell by 2 shots with an 87 and the win in Division 4!
Division 5: Royce Jiang (Diamond Bar, CA) Kiran Raina (Altadena, CA) Susan Barrow (Richmond, KY) Travis Shively, (Myrtle Beach, SC) were the contenders at Steele Canyon in D5. Kiran having played in 2024 found himself at his first event in our 2025 season. He said he was tired of always getting last place and had been practicing. Royce our champion at our last event at Oak Quarry was playing well again even after a rough first 4 holes. He finally settled down shooting a 45 on the back nine on a tough course and posted a 94. This was good enough to be just in front of Susan’s 95 and Travis’s score of 96. Well the practice paid off as Kiran was in control shooting 45, 44 with a par on 18 to shoot a round of 89 and his first win ever on the APT! Congrats Kiran the hard work has paid off!
Senior Net Contest
Tim Rohrer (San Diego, CA) with his great round in division 3 also earned him the win in senior net with a 69 net score and $264. Michael Konuch (Marysville, IL) came in second with a 71 and tied with Mel Portalatin (Union, NJ) who also shot a net 71.
