Tournament Champions
The first signature major of the 2025 season was at one of the most iconic and beautiful settings for a golf tournament – Kiawah Island Resort in Kiawah Island, SC. 100 players from all over the country descended on one of the most venerable tests in professional golf history, “The Ocean Course” – made famous by the iconic “War on the Shore” in 1991 that saw players struggle to break 80 at times in one of the most memorable Ryder Cups ever. Players would get to walk where Phil Mickelson impressively won the PGA Championship, silencing doubters who said he was past his prime in one of the most impressive Major Championship performances in history. APT members awoke to a beautiful sunset over the Atlantic and a near-perfect day to walk one of the greatest walks in the game of golf.
In Division 1, Will Morgan (Carolina Triad), Randy Hodges (Charlotte) and John Todd (St. Louis) each fired opening round 76’s at the Osprey Course to share the lead heading into Sunday. Will Morgan relied on his vast tournament experience to navigate the difficult Ocean Course in Round 2, firing a 79 in round 2 to separate himself from the field and earn a 4-shot victory at +11. Randy Hodges (Charlotte) finished 4 shots behind at +15, while John Todd (St. Louis) finished in solo 3rd at +16. Ivan Jones (Carolina Triad) finished in solo 4th place at +18, while James Davis (Atlanta) rounded out the top-5 at +21.
In Division 2, the leaderboard was stacked after Saturday’s round at Osprey, with Johnny Pierce (East Tennessee), Jeremy Key (Augusta), and Travis Wartluft (Charlotte) each tied at 79. Crowded behind him was one of the most competitive leaderboards of the year, with 2 players one-shot back at 80 and 4 players two-shots back at 81. Pierce continued his hot streak on Sunday, firing an impressive 79 on the difficult Ocean Course to earn a 3-shot victory. The leaderboard stayed crowded as Travis Wartluft, Joe Arnold (Metro New York), and Jeremy Key (Augusta) finished in a tie for 2nd at +17. 5th place would belong to St. Louis’ Todd Feuerhaken (St. Louis) at +19, while John Wayne Parrish (Carolina Triad) finished in solo 6th place at +23.
In Division 3, Chris Huge (Myrtle Beach) fired an opening round 80 to set the pace with a 3-shot lead heading into Sunday. Huge has been working hard to return to form after winning the Global Golf National Player of the Year Race in 2022. The Ocean Course features risk and reward opportunities that make no lead safe, and Kentucky’s Gary Barrow took advantage of some great play on Sunday, firing an 87 to climb the leaderboard and earn a 2-shot victory over his friend and Kentucky member Rusty Estes at +26. Huge had a very solid finish against a stacked field in solo 3rd at +29, while Tim Robinson (Virginia Capital) made the biggest move of the day with an 84 to finish in solo 4th position. Rounding out the top-5 was Larry Barber (New Jersey/Philadelphia) at +33 while Disney Season Kickoff Champion Scott Gennusa (Kansas City) rounded out the money at +35.
In Division 4, Linette Coddington (Myrtle Beach) came to play at the Osprey Course on Saturday. Her first round 82 was a career best on the APT by 5-strokes as Coddington was promoted late in the season last year from Division 5 after winning at Bear’s Best. Despite the great round, Coddington was chased closely by Baasanjargal Tugsgerel (Southern California) and Andy Repetto (New Jersey/Philadelphia). Coddington would navigate the difficult Ocean Course well, firing a final round 94 to earn a 2-shot win at +32 over Repetto, who matched Coddington’s 94 to finish in solo 2nd. Daniel Henris (Carolina East) moved up the leaderboard with a 94 on Sunday to finish tied for 3rd at +38 with Dolly Buenaventura (St. Louis). Rounding out the top-5 was Tugsgerel at +40.
In Division 5, Dave Densieski (Florida Southwest) jumped out to an early lead on Saturday with a 94, separating himself by 10 shots from the field. The lead would be 8 heading to the back 9 on Sunday, where they say Majors start. That’s where Peter Ko (East Tennessee) caught fire, finishing with 2 clutch par putts on the last two holes to make up the deficit and earn a one-shot victory at +54. Dave Densieski finished in solo 2nd at +55.
In the Open Net competition, Augusta’s Jeremy Key rose to the top, finishing at +6 for the two-days to earn a 4-shot victory over James Davis (Atlanta) and Scott Gennusa (Kansas City) at +10. Rounding out the money would be Ben Heinking (Chicago) and John Bean (Nashville) at +12 net for the 2-day competition.
Linette Coddington’s career day on Saturday would propel her to the Senior Net Title, finishing at 4-under par net and earning a 7-shot victory over Rusty Estes (Kentucky) and Gary Barrow (Kentucky), who finished at 3-over par. 4th place went to Chris Huge (Myrtle Beach) at +4, while Johnny Pierce (East Tennessee) cracked the top-5 at +5. The money would be rounded out in a 6-way tie for 6th place with Randy Hodges (Charlotte), Andy Repetto (New Jersey/Philadelphia), Dolly Buenaventura (St. Louis), Todd Feuerhaken (St. Louis), Joe Arnold (Metro New York), and Travis Wartluft (Charlotte) each finishing at 6-over par net for the 2-day competition.
