Tournament Champions
The Upstate Amateur Players Tour continued its new season with the second tournament of the slate on Sunday, traveling to Lake Murray for a Battle at the Lake held at Timberlake Country Club.
Golfers competed for nearly $3,500 in cash and VISA gift card prizes during the day of competition at one of the best semi-private clubs in the area, and the only golf course at Lake Murray.
Timberlake Country Club is a Willard Byrd design and features an enjoyable layout for golfers of all skill levels. The course was also rated No. 4 on the national list of Top 25 Most Improved Courses – Golfer’s Choice by golfpass.com.
The Upstate Amateur Players Tour travels the Upstate of South Carolina, along with portions of North Carolina and Georgia, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of ten different divisions. The Upstate Amateur Players Tour is designed by the players, for the players, and strives to always provide an enjoyable and competitive experience for all. While competing for cash and VISA gift card prizes, the tournaments held by the tour also feature an optional cash skins game.
Here’s a breakdown of the results from Sunday’s tournament by division:
Division 1 – Chapin, SC native Mike Milewski made himself right at home on Sunday as his round of 81 was enough to claim the top spot in Division 1. Milewski made five pars in his final eight holes to seal the deal and secure the victory. Dawson Thornton and Frank Mattson tied for second place in the division with rounds of 89. Mattson’s round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-five fifth hole.
Division 2 – Jimmy Popp found his groove at just the right time, making three birdies on the back nine to win Division 2 on Sunday. Popp made consecutive birdies on the 10th and 11th holes before making another birdie on the par-four 14th hole. Popp finished the back nine in 34, two under par. Matt Miller finished second with a round of 83, followed by Chad Faulkenberry who carded a round of 84 to finish third. Faulkenberry rounded into form on the back nine with six pars on the closing nine holes. Trent Whitfield and Sriganesh Ilango rounded out the top five in a tie for fourth place after posting rounds of 85.
Senior Division 2 – Jimmy Popp played his final 12 holes in one under par, en route to shooting 78, which proved to be more than enough to complete the clean sweep on Sunday with a victory in Senior Division 2 as well. Popp shot 44 on the front nine before making three birdies in his first five holes on the back nine. Trent Whitfield finished runner-up with a round of 85, followed by Bob Grove who carded a score of 87 to finish third.
Division 3 – Four pars in the final six holes helped Michael Shirley stave off a crowded group of challengers to win Division 3 on Sunday with a round of 84. Shirley played his first five holes in one over par, as he made birdie on the par-five fifth hole en route to a 41 on the front nine. Timothy Carswell finished second with a round of 87, as Allen Hagen came home third with a score of 89. Hagen finished his round off in style with a birdie on the par-three 17th hole. Myron Samuels and Chris Huge rounded out the top five with rounds of 90 and 91, respectively.
Senior Division 3 – While Timothy Carswell’s round of 87 came up just short in Division 3; his round was enough to earn the top honors in Senior Division 3. Carswell made a pair of pars on the back nine, and avoided the big numbers to secure a two-stroke victory. Allen Hagen was close behind in second place with a round of 89, followed by Myron Samuels in third place with a round of 90. Chris Huge took advantage of the par-five 12th hole, making birdie as he finished fourth with a round of 91. Richard Nota rounded out the top five with a round of 92.
Division 4 – A pair of birdies on the back nine proved to be the difference for Austin Perry, who carded a round of 88 and won Division 4 on Sunday. Perry birdied the par-four 11th hole and par-five 12th hole to climb the leader board, before two more pars steadied his round even further. George Bright was close behind in second place, posting a round of 90. Steve Daniels came home third with a round of 91. Peter Fahey shot 97 to finish fourth, followed by a five-way tie for fifth place, including Jeff Leagan, Big Al Reynolds, Billy Trull, Shady Sightler, and Rodney Ferrell who all carded rounds of 98.
Senior Division 4 – George Bright made five pars on the back nine, each of them crucial, as the Greenville, SC native secured the victory in Senior Division 4 on Sunday with a round of 90. Bright pared his final two holes of the round to narrowly score the victory in the division by just one stroke. Steve Daniels finished runner-up with a round of 91. Daniels pared both back nine par fives to claim second-place in the division. Peter Fahey finished third with a round of 97, highlighted by a birdie on the par-five 12th hole. Big Al Reynolds, Billy Trull, and Shady Sightler tied for fourth place with rounds of 98 to round out the top five in the division.
Division 5 – Eighteen holes of golf were not enough to determine a winner in Division 5 as Randy Poplin emerged victorious over Dick Jenkins in a playoff after both players carded rounds of 92. Poplin birdied the par-four 14th hole in order to reach the playoff, as Jenkins made three pars on the back nine. Glenn Pound and Marty Brock tied for third place in the division with rounds of 96, followed by Leroy Anderson in fifth place after carding a 99.
Senior Division 5 – Randy Poplin completed the clean sweep on Sunday as he also prevailed in the playoff in Senior Division 5 over Dick Jenkins after both players posted rounds of 92. Poplin made the lone birdie of the division on the par-four 14th hole. Glen Pound and Marty Brock tied for third with rounds of 96 as Danny Sullivan and Vern Verna rounded out the top five with rounds of 100 in a tie for fifth place.
