Despite the warm summer temperatures normal for mid-June, Monday made for a perfect day for golf as the Upstate Amateur Players Tour hosted its tournament at Fox Run Country Club in the ever-growing Simpsonville, SC area.

Fox Run’s traditional course layout is a test for golfers of any skill level. The greens are small and fast with slight undulations. Nine holes have water that comes into play and there are no homes throughout the course as the goal is to provide you with a quality golf experience that includes great service in a relaxed and comfortable club atmosphere.

The course, which has continued to improve over the years, is one of the best kept secrets in the area. Construction on the club began in 1956 with five holes opening originally. The course continued to grow to nine holes shortly thereafter. A motion was passed at the annual meeting held on November 6, 1958, to proceed with planning the construction of an additional nine holes, paving the way for the completion of the 18-hole course.

The Upstate Amateur Players Tour travels the Upstate of South Carolina, along with portions of North Carolina and Georgia, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of ten different divisions, including senior divisions. The tour plays the best courses in the area, often offering a chance to play several private courses as well. During competition, golfers are vying for cash and VISA gift card prizes each week, along with an optional skins game.

Here’s a breakdown of the results from Monday’s tournament:

Division 1 – Eighteen holes of golf proved not to be enough in Division 1 as DJ Freese and Walker Redmon found themselves tied with rounds of 75. Following the playoff, it was Freese who took home the top prize. Freese overcame a sluggish start on the front nine, playing the back nine in one under with two birdies. Freese took advantage of the 10th hole before birding the par-five 13th hole. Redmon got off to a hot start, making three birdies in his first five holes to shoot two under on the front nine. Redmon made his final birdie of the day on the par-four 14th hole before a tough go at the dogleg right par-five 16th hole. Joshua Phillips finished third with a round of 76, followed by Christopher White in fourth with a score of 78. Greg Moore rounded out the top five in the division with a round of 79.

Division 2 – Jamie Perez saved his best golf for the back nine, carding a round of 77 to win Division 2 on Monday. Perez birdied the short second hole before struggling to the finish on the front nine. Perez reset on the back, making birdie on the par-four 10th hole. Perez played the back nine in just one over par to secure the victory. Logan Pendergrass finished runner-up, posting a round of 79. Pendergrass made his lone birdie of the day on the par-five 13th hole. AJ Lee made the most birdies in the division, carding a score of 80 to finish in a tie for third place with Joe Tucker. Lee birdied both the par fives on the front nine before making consecutive birdies on Nos. 13 and 14. Tucker made the second most birdies in division 2, all three of which came on par fives as he played the four holes in two under. Branden Smith rounded out the top five in the division with a score of 81.

Division 3 – Mark Lytle outlasted a crowded field of challengers in Division 3 as his round of 78 was enough to claim the top spot. The Anderson, SC native made birdie on the par-three 11th hole, before making seven straight pars to close his round and solidify his victory. Joseph Wirtz finished second, three shots back with a round of 78. Wirtz settled into his round quickly, making six pars on the front nine. He made his lone birdie of the day on the par-four 14th hole. Wayne Blyler, Sonny Smith, and Ronnie Strange finished tied for third place with rounds of 83 to round out the top five in the division.

Senior Division 3 – Mark Lytle made it a clean sweep of the weekend as his round of 78 also earned him the top honors in Senior Division 3. Lytle bounced back from consecutive bogeys to birdie the par-three 11th hole, before going on a run of seven straight pars. His steady play down the stretch secured a five-stroke victory. Wayne Blyler, Sonny Smith, and Ronnie Strange tied for second with all three golfers posting rounds of 83. Blyler found his groove on the back nine, making five straight pars to open the closing stretch. Smith also played his best golf on the back, posting a closing nine score of four over par. Strange made his lone birdie of the day on the par-four 10th hole. Myron Samuels and Mark Stroupe tied for fifth place, completing the top five with rounds of 86.

Division 4 – Ryan Riffle saw many ups and downs on the back nine, though his round of 82 proved to be enough to win Division 4. Riffle made an impressive three birdies on the back nine, including ones on the 10th, 12th, and 16th holes, to card a round of 39 on the closing stretch. Kyle Trammell finished second with a round of 84, two strokes behind Riffle. Trammell made his lone birdie of the day on the par-four ninth hole to close the front nine with a round of 42.
