APT Memphis Welcomes Regional Competition at Tunica National
The Amateur Players Tour Memphis Chapter made its annual stop at Tunica National Golf & Tennis on July 18-19, bringing together one of the most competitive fields of the season. Players traveled from Memphis, Arkansas, St. Louis, Nashville, Kentucky, Birmingham, and Dallas/Fort Worth, creating a true regional event and a weekend filled with outstanding golf.
Tunica National once again proved why it remains one of the premier stops on the Memphis Chapter schedule. Excellent course conditions, warm summer weather, and two days of competitive play challenged every division as players battled for trophies, Player of the Year points, and bragging rights.
Division 1
Edward McDugle successfully defended his title with rounds of 76-75 to finish at 7-over par (151). After taking a two-shot lead into the final round, McDugle stayed in control throughout Sunday to earn another victory at Tunica National.
Spencer Cultra finished runner-up at 12-over (156), while Zachary Schopp claimed third at 16-over (160).
Division 2
Paul Luker captured the Division 2 title after posting rounds of 76-79 for an 11-over total of 155. Luker built enough of a cushion during the opening round to withstand a final-round charge from Birmingham’s Ronnie Averett, who finished second at 14-over (158).
Kevin Connolly rounded out the top three at 22-over (166).
Division 3
Division 3 belonged to Jon Sylvester, who put together a strong two-day performance to claim the championship with rounds of 74-82, finishing at 12-over par (156). Sylvester built a sizeable advantage with an outstanding opening-round 74 and managed the course well on Sunday to secure the victory.
Bryan Harwell of Nashville finished second at 18-over (162), while Iceman Clark claimed third at 26-over (170) after another solid weekend.
Division 4
Steven Walkley continued his impressive season, claiming another Division 4 victory with rounds of 86-87 for a 29-over total of 173.
Cale Alexander finished five strokes back in second at 34-over (178), while Dave Draucker (St. Louis), Darrel Ervin (Memphis), and Marshall Dean (Memphis) shared third place at 35-over (179).
Division 5
Brian Puckett of the Arkansas Chapter earned the Division 5 championship after carding rounds of 93-92 to finish at 41-over (185).
Esther Flora of the St. Louis Chapter finished runner-up at 43-over (187), while Memphis Chapter Director Arthur Miller Jr. placed third at 49-over (193).
Optional Net Competitions
In addition to the gross divisions, players also competed in the optional Senior Net and Mid-Am Net competitions, where scores are adjusted based on each player’s course handicap. These side games provide an additional opportunity for players of varying skill levels to compete on a level playing field.
Senior Net
The optional Senior Net competition featured one of the deepest fields of the weekend.
Bryan Harwell (Nashville) captured the title with an adjusted two-round total of 146 (+2) after posting rounds of 74 and an even-par 72.
William Frogge finished second at 149 (+5), while Kevin Connolly and Iceman Clark tied for third at 150 (+6).
One of the most impressive rounds of the weekend came from Dave Draucker (St. Louis), who fired an adjusted 3-under-par 69 on Sunday to climb into a tie for fifth after opening with an 82.
Mid-Am Net
Steven Walkley added another trophy to his weekend by winning the optional Mid-Am Net competition with an adjusted two-round total of 143 (-1), making him the only player in the field to finish under par after handicap adjustments.
Arthur Miller Jr. finished second at 153 (+9), while Tyler Byrd rounded out the top three at 157 (+13).
Looking Ahead
The Memphis Chapter now turns its attention toward the heart of the summer schedule, with Player of the Year races tightening across every division. The strong turnout from neighboring chapters made Tunica National one of the most competitive events of the season, and the momentum continues as players prepare for the next stop on the calendar.
With competitors from across the region continuing to support Memphis Chapter events, the remainder of the season promises more outstanding competition and exciting finishes.
