Tournament Champions
The Upstate Amatuer Players Tour’s new season rolled on this past weekend, as the tour make the trip to the middle-part of the state for its tournament at Timberlake Country Club presented by Spring Park Driving Range.
Despite it being the first Saturday in November, temperatures rose above 60 degrees by mid-morning, making for an ideal day of golf in the Carolina midlands.
The Upstate Amatuer Players Tour travels the Upstate of South Carolina, along with portions of North Carolina, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of five different divisions. The tour offers cash and VISA gift card prizes to the winners along with an optional cash skins game as the tour strives to provide a world-class experience for its competitors.
Timberlake Country Club, located in Chapin, SC, is known as the only golf course on Lake Murray. The 18-hole, par 71 championship course stretches 6,579 yards from the back tees and blends scenic beauty with strategic play.
Designed by legendary golf architect Willard Byrd, known for acclaimed designs such as Atlanta Country Club and the Country Club of North Carolina, the course is recognized among the finest layouts in the Carolinas. In 2024, the course was recognized as No. 4 most improved, according to Golf Pass’s 2024 National List of Top 25 Most Improved Courses.
Here’s a breakdown of the results from Saturday’s tournament by division:
Division 1 – Frank Mattson was the class of the field in Division 1, keeping his scorecard rather clean on a steady day as he carded a round of 78. Mattson posted a round of 38, just three-over par on the front nine.
Jody Clary finished second, three shots behind with a round of 81. Clary made the lone birdie of the division, taking advantage of the par-five fifth hole as he played his final five holes in one-under par on the front nine.
Patrick Martin rounded out the division with a round of 87. Martin made four pars on the back nine in his final six holes to shoot 43 on the inward stretch.
Division 2 – Weston Brown’s two front-nine birdies proved to be the difference in his two-stroke victory as he carded a round of 76 to win Division 2 on Saturday. Brown made two birdies in a four-hole stretch to shoot just one-over par on the front nine. Brown made six straight pars to start the back nine to maintain his position atop the leaderboard.
Marty Henson and Sean Veilleux tied for second place with rounds of 78. Henson saved his best golf for the back nine, making eight pars and one bogey on the closing stretch to secure a share of the runner-up position. Veilleux also played well on the back nine, making seven pars and just two bogeys.
Trent Whitfield and A.J. Lee rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth place with rounds of 79 and 83, respectively. Lee finished with two birdies on the day, both of which came on the back nine as he shot 40 on the closing stretch.
Division 3 – Nine golfers finished within five shots of the eventual winner as Eric Sage emerged from the crowded group of challengers to win Division 3 with a round of 85. Sage made a back nine charge, birding the 14th and 16th holes to shoot 41 on the inward stretch, and clear the field by one stroke.
Pat Ryan was close behind in second place with a round of 86. Ryan buckled down on the back nine, avoiding double bogeys as the played the stretch in six over par. James Simons finished third after posting an 87. Andy Murrow finished fourth with a round of 89.
A five-way tie for fifth place included Bill Windsor, Brett Yon, Michael Glymph, Sonny Smith, and Calvin Carter – who all posted rounds of 90.
Division 4 – Derrick Sage finished is round off in style, birding the par-five closing hole to shoot 83 and win Division 4 on Saturday. In addition to the birdie on No. 18, Sage also took advantage of the par-five fifth hole, making eagle.
Tracy Franklin finished second with a round of 87, followed by Michael Chastain in third place with a score of 88. Both players finished their rounds with six pars each.
Ernie Rowland finished fourth with a round of 89, followed by Marty Brock and Big Al Reynolds who tied for fifth place with rounds of 91.
Division 5 – Rodney Ferrell saved his best golf for his final four holes, playing the stretch in even par to card a round of 90 and win Division 5 on Saturday. Ferrell made three pars and a birdie on the front nine before making four straight pars to close the round on the back nine.
Leroy Anderson and Jam Gamlin were close behind in second place with rounds of 91. Anderson got off to a solid start, playing the front nine in just seven-over par. Gamlin’s round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-four seventh hole.
Dick Jenkins finished fourth, posting a round of 96 as Anthony Johnson rounded out the top five with a score of 99.
Mid-Am (Net) – Weston Brown made it a memorable weekend as he also claimed the Mid-Am Net Division with a round of 68, three-under par. Brown played the front nine in three-under par, making three net birdies and a net eagle.
Derrick Sage finished second, just one stroke back with a net round of 69. Sage finished the round with six net birdies and two net eagles, including one on the par-five closing hole.
Leroy Anderson finished third with a net round of 72. Anderson kept his scorecard clean on the front nine, making four net birdies to shoot three-under par. Zach Chapman finished fourth with a round of 74, followed by Brett Yon in fifth place with a score of 77.
Senior (Net) – Rodney Ferrell ran away with the Senior Net Division, firing a net round of five-under par, 66. Ferrell played his best golf on the back nine, making five net birdies and a net eagle. He played his final four holes in five under par – proving to be the difference in his victory.
Marty Brock, Tracy Franklin, and Jan Gamlin finished tied for second place as all three golfers carded net rounds of 70. Brock made seven net birdies as Franklin made six net birdies. Gamlin played her best golf on the front nine, making two net eagles and a net birdie to open the round.
Frank Mattson and Trent Whitfield finished tied for fifth place, posting net rounds of 71.
