The Amateur Players Tour is excited to announce its first stroke-play major of the season, the Lone-Star Shootout to be contested at TPC San Antonio (Canyons & AT&T Oaks Courses) March 6th and 7th. In partnership with the host hotel JW Marriott, players will get an elite golf experience and extraordinary resort atmosphere for the first stroke-play major of the 2021 season. The AT&T Oaks course annually serves as the host for the Valero Texas Open, which attracts some of the PGA Tour’s top pros to San Antonio. The APT will host the Lone Star Shootout just 3 weeks before the perennial PGA Tour stop. The Canyons Course is also no stranger to the world’s top players, as it is a former host of a Champions Tour Event. “We are excited to bring our players to such a great host venue” said Founder Matt Minder. “The Oaks and Canyon courses allow us to appreciate the masterful design work of both Greg Norman and Pete Dye, and expose our players to the conditions that PGA Tour players experience every week. When you throw that in with the spectacular accommodations at the JW Marriott on property, this will be a special weekend you won’t want to miss!”
The Oaks course, designed by PGA TOUR legend, Greg Norman, with player consultant, Sergio Garcia, reflects the TOUR’s departure from the modern tournament-style course (expansive grass areas and spectator mounding) to a more natural look and feel, without sacrificing the fan experience, making it very tournament friendly. The Oaks course plays host to the PGA TOUR’s Valero Texas Open.
Due to the differing topography, the Pete Dye-designed Canyons course, paired with Greg Norman’s Oaks course, respectively complement one another with each course encompassing their own unique look, feel and playing experience for both Members and resort guests to enjoy. While very different from the traditional, tree-lined Oaks course, the Canyons course stands on its own as a tournament venue in terms of design, strategy, and hill country beauty. The course played host to PGA TOUR Champions San Antonio Championship from 2011-2015.
Registration is open now for the Lone Star Shootout, to be contested Saturday, March 6th, and Sunday March 7th. Tee times will begin at 7:30 am both days. More information can be found at amateurplayerstour.com/majors.
