Division 1
The Amateur Players Tour’ SoCal Chapter contested the 2022 Open Championship at Olivas Links in Ventura, CA on Saturday. The weather was ideal, with 10-15MPH breezes off the ocean, and a beautiful links-style layout. In Division 1, future CSU-San Marcos star Gavin McCormick made three straight birdies to open the round to shoot to the top of the leaderboard and turn in 34. He would remain there all day, pressed by Jason Hopkins and Ryan Gay who turned in 37 and 35, respectively. Moving to the slightly tougher back 9, Gavin got it back to -3 on the 14th before a slip up at 16. Finishing at 2 under 70 from the Olivas Links black tees, he claimed the silver plated Jug and a $175 Visa Gift Card for his 4 shot victory over Jason and Ryan!
Division 2
Last tournament’s winner Troy Shedeed continued his fine play, earning a second straight APT victory while posting 79. Mark Lytle returned from his two month “work trip” to Hawaii also in fine form- finishing two back to earn a $75 Visa Gift Card for 2nd. Troy took home a $200 Visa Gift Card and the Jug! Will Troy threepeat in Reno at the end of the month?
Division 3
“Have clubs, will travel” is Felix Monjes’ mantra in 2022, and he’s been out collecting big game trophies while doing so. This time around, a very steady 78 (with three birdies) was good for another trophy, as he added the Jug to his impressive collection. Turning in 38, he was tied with Christopher Hall for the lead with John Dwyer III two back. Felix’s closing birdie pushed the final margin to three over John, whose solo second was good for a $75 Visa Gift Card. Felix took home the Jug and a $225 Visa Gift Card for his victory, as well as a potential promotion to Division 2! That would be an APT record-setting THREE promotions in one season, congrats Felix!
Division 4
In the last tournament recap, we predicted Salvador Montalvo Jr would visit the winner’s circle in Division 4 by the end of the season. He made us look prescient on Saturday, as his 87 in the brunt of the wind was good for a one shot victory over Milton Gray. Milton had the advantage by one at the turn, and the two battled all back 9 while exchanging the lead multiple times. Salvador took home a $200 Visa Gift Card and the Jug for his first victory on the APT!
Division 5
Devon Denholm got his first tournament action in the preseason Rose Bowl Fourball, and was excited to get back out for a regular season event. He started out fast on the front 9 which has been known to give up low scores- posting two birdies on his way to a career low 39. Things returned to a bit more normal for him on the back 9, but the margin was too great for the field and his 89 was good for a 5 shot victory over Juan Diaz. He took home the $150 Visa Gift Card and the Jug for his win!
