2024 Hilton Head Lakes Golf Tournament Results

Thirty-two golfers were treated to one of the newest courses in the Lowcountry, Hilton Head Lakes, on Saturday as the Charleston Amateur Players Tour held its second tournament of the new season. The 18-hole championship layout was designed by legend Tommy Fazio and takes full advantage of the property’s lakes and natural wetlands.  

The Charleston Amateur Players Tour travels the Lowcountry of South Carolina, offering golfers of a skill levels a chance to compete for cash and VISA gift card prizes across ten different divisions, including senior divisions. The tour is designed by the players, for the players with a priority on creating a competitive and fun outing for golfers across the area.  

Below are the results from Saturday’s tournament at Hilton Head Lakes broken down by division: 

Division 1 – Ryan Bakken turned in a bogey-free round of three under par to win the top division on Saturday. Bakken capped his round off with a birdie on the par-four closing hole. Brent Densmore finished runner-up after shooting one-under par, 71. 

Densmore took the lead on the front nine with a pair of birdies before making two bogeys in his final six holes. Phillip Knezevich shot 74 to finish third. Michael Huh and Darryl Phelps finished tied for fourth with rounds of 78. 

Senior Division 1 – Darryl Phelps was the lone participant in Senior Division 1 with a round of 78. Phelps had a consistent day with scores of 39 on both the front and back nine. His round was highlighted by a pair of birdies on the day.  

Division 2 – Four birdies on the day proved enough for Jeremy Key to win Division 2 on Saturday with a round of even-par, 72. Key got to two-under par when he birdied the par-five seventh hole before two bogeys to close the front nine.  

A pair of back nine birdies had Key back under par as he cleared the rest of the field by five strokes. Bret Stanfield finished runner-up with a round of 77. Craig Thigpen shot 81 and finished third, followed by John Tompkins and Kevin Lyles who rounded out the top-five with rounds of 86 and 89, respectively.  

Senior Division 2 – The only entry in Senior Division 2, Kevin Lyles shot 89 after finding his groove on the back nine. A tough start on the front nine gave way to a string of five straight pars on the back nine. Lyles birdied the par-five opening hole as well.  

Division 3 – A late charge by several players in the field fell short as Brannon Gregory held on Saturday to shoot 81 and win Division 3. Gregory shot two-over par on the front nine, highlighted by a birdie on the first hole. Darrell Johnson attempted to make a late charge but finished runner-up with a round of 83. 

John Benton shot 84 to finish in third place. Benton got off to a slow start but opened the back nine with three pars and a birdie. Sam Lewis and David Lee rounded out the top-five with rounds of 89 and 91, respectively.  

Senior Division 3 – While Darrell Johnson came up just short of the top spot in Division 3, his round of 83 cleared him by one shot to win Senior Division 3 on Saturday. Johnson used three pars on his final four holes to win the division.  

Close behind was John Benton, who shot 84. Benton buckled down on the back nine, shooting just three over par coming into the clubhouse. David Lee and Brian Gregor rounded out the division in fourth and fifth place.  

Division 4 – John Haynie closed his round in stellar fashion, playing the back nine in just two-over par to win by seven shots with a round of 82 in Division 4. Haynie found his footing on the ninth hole before rattling off seven pars in the next eight holes to create separation on the leaderboard.  

Paul Guy and Cooter Douglas finished tied for second after posting rounds of 89. Douglas’ round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-four 15^th hole.  

Scott Johnson shot 91 to finish fourth as Travis Allred rounded out the top-five with a score of 94. 

Senior Division 4 – John Haynie’s round of 82 was also more than enough to claim first place in Senior Division 4 on Saturday. Haynie’s round of 10-over par included an impressive 11 pars on the day. Paul Guy and Cooter Douglas finished as runners-up with rounds of 89.  

Daniel Cash shot 95 and finished fourth. Cash made birdie on the par-four fifth hole en route to shooting seven-over par on the front nine.  

Division 5 – Randy Poplin made three pars on the front nine and outpaced the field by five shots to win Division 5 on Saturday with a round of 91. Poplin parred three out of four holes on the front nine to steady the ship after a tough start.  

John Greider finished second after shooting 95, followed by third-place finisher Justin Molyneux, who shot 110. 

Senior Division 5 – Randy Poplin’s round proved more than enough to also win Senior Division 5 on Saturday with a score of 91. Second-place finisher Justin Molyneux shot 110, including consecutive pars on the 12^th and 13^th holes.
