Tournament Champions
We had the first elevated event of the year in the Carolina Triad. The venue was at the one and only Forest Oaks CC. The course has hosted many State amateur tournaments and famously known for being the staple course of the PGA Wyndham Championship (formerly known as GGO classic). The APT event was set for 2 days of challenging golf.
In Division 1 has 11 players competing for 2 prize payouts spots. During the 1st round Chip Collins started the round off very hot carding a front nine 33(-3). Collins had some hiccups coming down the stretch. Sam Starnes of Monroe, NC played consistently throughout the first round and was the 1st round leader with a score of 73(+1). The final round the players dealt with rainy conditions and open the possibility of players making a run from behind. The back and forth ended up with a victory by Hope Mills, NC Chip Collins with a 2-day total of 150(+6) to win by 1 shot over Sam Starnes. Collins also claimed the Senior Double Dip victory as well.
In Division 2 the players had very similar story lines. In the 1st round the leader by 2 shots was Brandon Thompson over TJ Eaves. Thompson carded a 75(+3) and Eaves scored 77(+5). The final round started, and the rain was at its heaviest downpour of the day. The field was open, anything is possible in these conditions. We two major moves up the leaderboard by Terry Newsome and Matthew Fegely. Newsome was 7 shots behind the leader and carded a score of 76(+4) to take the clubhouse lead. Fegely short game prevailed to complete the comeback and win his 3rd consecutive Carolina Triad event. Newsome finished runner up in the open division but victorious in the senior double dip. In 3rd place we had tie between A’aron Latimer and Anthony Mullis.
In Division 3 we had one of our largest Day 1 leads of the day by Kirk Tatge. Tatge carded a first round 77(+5) to hold a 5 shot lead over Daniel Shelbo. The 2nd round started and we had some players card very low rounds to make the contest interesting. The lowest round in Division 3 of the day came from Christy McCauley 81(+9). The round put her in contention. We had another low round by Rob Andrews 82(+10) that also had him in contention. In the end, Tatge held onto a 1-shot victory to win a true Double Dip championship (Senior and Open). The 2nd place prize was claimed Rob Andrews and rounding out the Top 3 was Christy McCauley and Daniel Shelbo.
In Division 4 we had another dominating performance by David Cline of Charlotte, NC. Cline 85(+13) was good enough for 5 shot lead over Cooter Douglas after the 1st round. The 2nd round started, and we had a strong performance put together by Joey Fyall to cut the gap almost in half after 9 holes. Cline buckled and finished strong to take the victory by 3 shots. David Cline victory was a true Double Dip and Open title of Forest Oaks CC.
In Division 5 we had 6 players competing for the title at Forest oaks cc for this weekend. The 1st round leader was Mike Charles with a score of 92(+20) to have a 2 shot lead over Rivia Brown. Brown was very consistent and carded the exact same score of 94(+22). The consistent play was good enough to complete another comeback in Carolina Triad elevated event.
