An overcast day made a perfect backdrop for the Upstate Amateur Players Tour as it traveled to Connestee Falls Golf Club to host its tournament on Sunday. The competitors were vying for nearly $5,300 in side-game cash and VISA gift card prizes during the round.

The Upstate Amateur Players Tour travels the Upstate of South Carolina and portions of North Carolina, offering golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in ten different divisions.

The weather turned out to be stellar for the competitors who traveled to Connestee Falls Golf Club, nestled in Brevard, North Carolina. Regarded as Brevard’s premier mountain course, Connestee Falls is an 18-hole championship layout designed by George Cobb. Situated at more than 3,200 feet above sea level, Connestee Falls provides a memorable experience for golfers.

Here’s a breakdown of the results by each division:

Division 1 – Brandon Pearson’s impressive start on the front nine proved to be more than enough to win Division 1 on Sunday with a round of three under par, 69. Pearson made an eagle on the par-five seventh hole before birding the eighth hole to go along with seven other pars on the front nine.

Walker Redmon finished runner-up after posting a round of 74. Redmon birdied his first two holes of the day en route to shooting even par on the front nine. Greg Moore finished third with a round of 77. John Schiemer and Tim Cook rounded out the top-five with rounds of 78 and 80.

Schiemer’s lone birdie of the day came on the par-four sixth hole as he shot 39 on the front nine. Cook made a birdie on the par-four 14th hole.

Senior Division 1 – Greg Moore managed to bounce back from several front nine bogies to shoot 77 and win Senior Division 1 on Sunday. Moore was two over par after five holes before paring the remaining four holes on the front nine.

Robert Kirtz finished runner-up in the division with a score of 85. Kirtz’ highlight of the day came on the par-five seventh hole where he made birdie.

Division 2 – Joe Tucker saved his best golf for the end of his round, playing his final nine holes in two under par, with two birdies and seven pars, to shoot 72 and win Division 2 on Sunday. Tucker shot 38 on the front before stringing together a run of nine holes with scores of par or better. His birdies came on the 12th and 14th holes.

Carlos Santana made five straight pars in a row to preserve his round, carding a 79 to finish in second place. Derek Godfrey finished fourth with a round of 81.

Scott Stevenson, Carlos Mojica, Bob Grove, Adam Moore, and Brad Anderson all tied for fourth place with rounds of 82.

Senior Division 2 – Joe Tucker made it two-for-two on Sunday as his round of 72 was more than enough to win Senior Division 2 as well. Carlos Mojica and Bob Grove tied for second place, 10 shots behind Tucker with rounds of 82.

Mojica made birdie on the par-five second hole as he shot 40 on the opening nine. Bobby Ream and Wayne Blyler rounded out the top-five in the division with rounds of 87 and 88, respectively.

Division 3 – Eighteen holes of golf was not enough to determine a winner in Division 3 as A.J. Lee prevailed in a playoff on Sunday over Tommy Boyter and William Buie. All three players carded rounds of 82 before the tie for first was broken.

Lee got off to a steady start, paring his first five holes en route to shooting 39 on the outward nine. Lee managed to par three out of his last five holes to reach the playoff.

Boyter and Buie tied for the runner-up position as Boyter bookended his front nine with birdies on No. 1 and No. 9.

Travis Blackwell was close behind in fourth place, carding a round of 83. Blackwell made birdie on the par-three 13th hole to steady his back nine.

Gregg Pruitt, Matt Houser, Matt Miller, and Dan Eastep tied for fifth place with rounds of 84. Houser made two back-nine birdies to climb the leaderboard, including one on the par-four closing hole.

Senior Division 3 – A playoff was also needed to determine the winner in Senior Division 3 on Sunday as William Buie was declared the winner after the day of competition. Both players shot 82 as Boyter finished as the runner-up.

Buie pared four of his last five holes on the front nine to take a two-stroke lead over Boyter to the back nine. Travis Blackwell finished third after posting an 83. Dan Eastep shot 84 to finish fourth.

Lawrence Daniels made three birdies during his round of 85 to tie David Croston for fifth place.

Division 4 – Six golfers finished within five shots of first place as James Gravely outlasted a field of 20 challengers to win Division 4 on Sunday with a round of 85. Gravely got off to a hot start, recording five pars on the front nine to climb the leaderboard.

Charlie Warstler finished in second place, one shot back after carding a round of 86. Warstler made two birdies on the day, including one on the par-four 14th hole. Larry Lee finished in third place after posting a round of 87.

A birdie on the par-three 17th hole helped Peter Fahey reach the top-five as he shot 88 and finished fourth. Colby Crow rounded out the top-five with a score of 89.

Senior Division 4 – While Larry Lee’s round of 87 was just a few strokes shy of the top spot in Division 4 on Sunday, the Gaffney, SC native’s round did earn him the top honors in Senior Division 4. Lee used a birdie on the par-four 12th hole to bounce back before making three more pars down the stretch to secure the victory.

Peter Fahey was in close pursuit, finishing just one stroke behind with a round of 88. Fahey shot 44 on both the front and back nines during his consistent round.

Cooter Douglas came home third with a round of 90. Douglas’ highlight of the round came on the par-four 14th hole where he made birdie. Maurice Sherman and Scott Bryant rounded out the top-five in a tie for fourth place with rounds of 91.

Division 5 – Gene Mason positioned himself with three pars on the front nine en route to carding a round of 91 to win Division 5 on Sunday. Mason made back-to-back pars on the fifth and sixth holes to settle into his round.

Dick Jenkins finished in second place, two strokes behind after posting a round of 93. Mike Hillis shot 94 to finish third, followed by Jeff Best in fourth place with a round of 97.

Danny Sullivan and Warren Sullivan tied for fifth place with rounds of 98.

Senior Division 5 – Gene Mason made it a clean sweep of the day in the division as his round of 91 also earned him the top honors in Senior Division 5 on Sunday. Mason made two back nine pars, proving to be the difference in his two-stroke victory.

Two birdies on the card landed Dick Jenkins in the runner-up position with a round of 93. His birdies came on the opening hole and the par-three 13th hole on the back nine.

Jeff Best shot 97 to finish third, followed by Danny Sullivan and Tim Kunkel who finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
