Well California has been in a heat wave in the hundreds the past week and it was going to be refreshing to play on the coast in temperatures in the 70’s was expected.

However, mother nature threw us a change up and when we arrived thunder, lightning and rain was happening!! Wow what a difference.  As I text the golfers most didn’t believe me that tee times were delayed 30 minutes due to lightning in the area!

It ended up being a nice overcast day for most of it and moments of sun came out but the high was only 69, what a great day for golf.  The Olivas links course was in great condition and the challenging holes once again took down some of the best golfers with the accuracy required on certain shots.

Nature was also happening as coyotes were very present on the course and even ran through one of our groups as a golfer was swinging!  This made for some interesting moments on the course!

Some great play on this nice day for golf.

Division 1: We had a nice field of 7 D1 players, 2 came down from Las Vegas, and last year’s chapter finals winner Kevin Christie (Newport Beach, CA) was playing.  Returning after missing the Rose Bowl was season points leader Elliott Sherrill (Brea, CA) and he was up to his normal play going 1 under on the front nine.  Kevin Christie was battling Elliott at even par through 9 holes along with Las Vegas player Blake Barakat at plus 1.  Elliott just played steady, and the rest of the field fell off securing the win again this season with an even par 72 round! Second place with a birdie on 18 went to Blake Barakat (Las Vegas, NV) with a 75.

Division 2: We had a fresh new field of 10 golfers for our division 2 field.  Season points leaders Angel Sotelo, Drew Perez, and Kyle Cardoza were not playing this event with scheduling conflicts, so the opportunity for someone to capitalize was available.  Vinny OBrien (Sun Valley, CA) Chris Hall (Castaic, CA) Chris Cawte (Marina Del Rey, CA) were paired togther and all playing well.  Chris Hall was leading after 13 holes as Vinny Obrien had just taken a triple on #12.  Chris Hall unfortunately took an 8 on the par 4 16th and moved out of contention.  Vinny finished with 4 straight pars and shot 78 to take the division 2 trophy!

Division 3: John Dwyer III (Ventura, CA) leading points player in Division 3, was playing well and Scott Chalayan Cessna (Anaheim, CA) was also out strong with a 39 on the front nine.  Andrew Kim (Anaheim, CA) was the one on fire however turning the front nine at -1 with three birdies!  Unfortunately, Andrew went on a 5 hole double bogey streak that brough him back to the pack.  Craig Ogden (Hemet, CA) was in the mix as the 4 leaders came down the stretch of 18.  Scott Cessna had a 3 shot lead heading into 18 but was wild off the tee and scrambling.  His triple bogey 8 gave them all a chance.  Andrew missed his 6 footer for par and ended up at 84, one shot back.  John Dwyer Bogeyed 17 and assumed he was out of it only to find out he also finished with par on 18 and an 84.  Craig Ogden bogeyed 18 and left him at 85, which left Scott Chalayan Cessna with an 83 and the championship for division 3.

Division 4:Kurt Odegard (Anaheim Hills, CA) Marty Rinehart (Upland, CA) and Saul Armendiraz (Granada Hills, CA) were the only 3 players in Division 4 at this particular tournament.  We were missing our normal strong field in D4. Kurt, Marty, and Saul battled it out but it was Kurt who hung on with bogey on 18 to win by 3 shots over Marty.  This will tighten up the player of the year race in D4 as Kurt inches closer in the points race.

Division 5: We had a good group of guys playing in division 5 with the Rose Bowl champ not in the field after being promoted to division 4 with his fine play.  Kirk Olmos (Moreno Valley, CA) Ronak Desai (Irvine, CA) Dennis McZeal (Fontana, CA) all in the field at battling hard. Kirk, Ronak, Joshua, and Shadow were the first group out for the day, but Dennis was out last, so he knew the scores to beat. Dennis was playing tough with an 8 over front nine putting him in command.  Now posted and in the clubhouse, Kirk Olmos, even with his triple bogey on 18 was able to still post a 93 and was wondering if it would be enough the way Dennis was playing.  Ronak dealing with some physical issues was able to finish his round with a 97 and was in second.  Dennis hit a rough patch on the back nine and took a triple on 18 as well posting a 99, giving Division 5 to points leader Kirk Olmos.

Senior Net contest: Kirk Olmos (Moreno Valley, CA) with his fine play in division 5 posted a net score of 73, 1 over par. Finishing in second was John Dwyer III (Ventura, CA) at plus 2.

Open Net Contest: We had a tie in our Open Net contest as Scott Chalayan Cessna (Anaheim, CA) and Andrew Kim (Anaheim, CA) both finished with a net score of 1 over par 73.  They decided to do a playoff for the trophy and on hole 3, Scott made a birdie and took home the trophy and they both split $200, taking home $100 each.

Congratulations to all of our winners!
