    Mozingo Lake Championship Recap

    08/17-18/2024

Mozingo Lake never disappoints, and this year we called in a favor with mother nature and got the absolute best weather you could ask for in mid-August.  Low 80’s, the lightest of breezes, and a very lush and beautiful golf course made for some great scores, if, you could navigate the always tricky green complexes!

Jacob Bruhn made a strong statement in D1 going out and firing off an even par round on Saturday, giving himself a 4-stroke lead over director Jake Englebrake and regular winner Kory Glasgow.  Bruhn figured all he needed to do was shoot another round close to even and he’d have it in the bag.  And despite a solid push from Englebrake on the front 9, shooting a 2 under 34, Bruhn did all he needed to do and shot an impressive 1 under on the front.  Glasgow found himself a few shots back of 2nd, but on the back 9, he turned it on while Englebrake stumbled, and Bruhn stayed steady.  Bruhn finished with an even par round, while Kory and Jake both finished with a 2 over round, giving Bruhn a back-to-back victory at Mozingo Lake.

Tim Fuemmeller looked like he was going to run away with Division 2 after an extremely dominant day 1 performance of even par, with the closest chasers Cliff Austin and Allen Hall at 8 over par. But day 2 was a change in the tides for Tim and Cliff.  Cliff ended up firing off his best ever APT round of an even par 72, and Tim couldn’t gather himself to finish it off, struggling with a 10 over par 82 allowing the door to open and Austin to take advantage of that.  This is Austin’s first 2-day victory on the APT. Given both guys’ performances lately, I can see this scenario of these two battling it out happening more and more often.

Division 3 saw a first-time winner this season, with Aaron Hetherington going wire to wire and playing some of the best golf in his career.  A first round 76 gave him a 3 shot lead over Nate VanDeVoorde and 4 shot lead over the steady Paul Stanton.  Anything could happen come Sunday.  Aaron and Paul battled it out all day, with Aaron dropping some long-range bombs on the greens to take the wind out the sails of Paul, Nate, and Brandon Hale.  Aaron backed up his 76 with a solid 78, while Paul was able to leapfrog VanDeVoorde with an impressive 79.  Aaron won with a convincing 5 stroke margin, 10 over for the weekend, and finally seeing his hard work pay off.

Division 4 was a banger this weekend, and the leaderboard was fun to watch!  Brett Bullock continued his solid play on Saturday, carding a field leading 82 and racking up a 4-stroke lead over Paul Orovets and 6 stroke lead over Alan Parker, Jeff Rader, and John Bilek.  But Sunday, Brett’s run of form came to an hault, and as he struggled to finish it off, while Alan Parker, Jeff Rader and John Bilek were able to improve their scores on day 2.  A clutch eagle for Parker was the difference between 2 or 3rd place and the win, but with that eagle, he was able to hold of Rader by one shot and Bilek by 2.  Alan is in good form leading up to the North American Championship.

Brian Canady was leading a fairly clogged up leaderboard in D5 after an opening round 90 on Saturday.  Unfortunately, he was not able to hold on to that lead come Sunday as his good friend Irving Beeks stormed back from 6 strokes back to best Canady by 10 strokes and take the win, with Jim Seibert able to come back and take 2nd place.  This was Irving’s first win on tour, and his excitement was extremely evident as he celebrated by hoisting Canady in the air at the awards!
