The Charleston Amateur Players Tour wrapped up its season with the 2024 Local Championship hosted at Lake Marion Golf Course in Santee, SC this past weekend.

The Charleston Amateur Players Tour travels the Lowcountry of South Carolina, and portions of Georgia, giving golfers of all skill levels a chance to compete in one of ten different divisions. The tournaments feature cash and VISA gift card prizes, as more than $3,100 was up for grabs during the two-day tournament held at Lake Marion.

Located in the heart of Santee lies one of the more rewarding golf experiences in the area. Lake Marion Golf Course opened in 1978, is a perennial favorite with traveling golfers and features fantastic Miniverde greens that are in perfect shape all year long.

Designed by Eddie Riccoboni, Lake Marion challenges golfers with pine tree-lined fairways, bordering lakes and 47 sand bunkers. But don’t let these challenges fool you; Lake Marion is an extremely fair test of golf and is sure to please players of all abilities.

Here’s a breakdown of the results from the weekend of action:

Division 1 – Thirty-six holes of golf was not enough to decide a winner in Division 1, as all three golfers reached the playoff after posting a score of 11-over par for the tournament. In the end, it was Brent Densmore who prevailed after carding rounds of 74 and 81.

Densmore made two birdies in his opening round of 74 to build a two-shot lead entering the final round. Two birdies in his final four holes on Sunday allowed Densmore to reach the playoff.

Ryan Bakken and Nicholas Politis tied for second place in the division with rounds of 76 and 79. Bakken got off to a host start on Saturday, eagling the par-five fourth hole before a string of three straight birdies to close the front nine.

Politis climbed the leaderboard on Sunday with a steady front nine that included four pars and a birdie to open the day. Politis also pared five out of his last six holes to reach the playoff.

Division 2 – Kevin Lyles saved his best golf for Sunday, carding a final round 69 to win Division 2 by seven shots over the weekend. Lyles opened with a 76 before playing the front nine on Sunday in one-under par with two birdies en route to a round of 69.

Chuck Bell finished second with rounds of 74 and 78, as he held lead after Saturday’s opening round. Bell opened the tournament with an eagle on the par-five first hole as he played the opening nine in even par.

A.J. Lee climbed the leaderboard on Sunday with a final round 76 to go with a 78 to finish third. Lee recorded a pair of birdies on Sunday, bookending his round as he took advantage of the par-five opening and closing holes.

Sean Mason and John Tompkins rounded out the top five in the division with rounds of 77-79 and 78-81, respectively.

Senior Division 2 – Kevin Lyles made it two-for-two over the weekend as his rounds of 76 and 69 were also enough to win Senior Division 2. Lyles trailed by two after the first round before rattling off a string of birdies to close his round on Sunday to finish one-over par for the tournament.

Chuck Bell finished second in the division with rounds of 74 and 78. Bell bounced back from a slow start on Sunday to play the back nine in even par and solidify his position as runner-up.
